Fulton Breaks Through to First Career MDLMS Win at Thunderbird

by Dusty Wiegert

MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- After a seven year hiatus Late Model racing finally returned to the Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Oklahoma on July 10 with a hometown hero picking up the big win on the historic half mile.

Greg Skaggs jumped out to an early lead at the start of the 25 lap feature event followed by Missouri's Don Cloyd. Justin Fulton also moved into the third spot and quickly worked around Cloyd. A quick series of yellows at the start shuffled the running order, allowing Alternative Pest Management Cash Dash winner Bryan Sugg to close in as well.

Skaggs and Fulton made contact before the halfway point, with Skaggs bringing out the yellow. Fulton would take over the lead, with Cloyd and Sugg behind. Fulton would pull away to a big lead while Sugg got past Cloyd for second. As the laps wound down Sugg slowly started catching Fulton through lapped traffic but it wasn't enough as Fulton cruised past the stripe with the win, followed by Sugg, Cloyd, Gary Gorby, and Dan Leatherman.

Previous race winner Brad Fortney picked up the win in a photo finish of heat 1 beating Dan Leatherman while Fulton topped Skaggs in a shootout in heat 2. Sugg started last and finished first in the Alternative Pest Management cash dash, using the top side of the track to take the win.

The series now moves on to the Minneapolis Raceway in Minneapolis, Kansas for the next event on August 7.
