I bet TMS dumps one of its IRL weekends (the November one) and moves that CTS race to the new NASCAR Nextel Cup race along with the Busch Series. IRL is going down anyways since CART will be making a come back and the Indy 500 means almost nothing now that Tony killed it.

cool, glad we finally got that 2nd cup date, btw Jason i disagree with what your take is on IRL going down and Tony killing the Indy 500. if anyone is going down its CART.

That would be why the IRL a once great event with 100,000 people for Qualifying and Carb Day has dwindled down to empty stands and there are still a TON of tickets left for the Indy 500. What happened to that once great race? The IRL does put on good races here at Texas but that is it. They wanted a low cost series with American names. Guess what. Now it is filled with foreign drivers, foreign manufacturers, and the costs have skyrocketed in the last 3 years! Remember Greg Ray? He was exactly what the series originally sought for. Now he is in debt and barely hanging on to his racing career! What happened to Foyt racing? Now lets look at Cart. They are already down. They can't go down. Only one way to go and their costs are low and more American drivers! Maybe when Tony George goes bankrupt from paying the F1 fees (won't be F1 at IMS soon), paying to keep the IRL afloat, trying to kill Champcar, and no one going to the Indy 500 his crown jewel we can get Champcar back in control of the Indy 500 and actually have a bump day and a full field of 33 cars! lol Seriously everything was fine until he started the IRL. No need for it. What is funny is that IRL's ratings (except indy 500) on TV with espn are the same as Champcar's on SpikeTV.

You say that. I dunno. It is sad though that a series that once could attract F1 stars to the US is now hurting so bad. Its that type of racing in general that hurts right now and I think it started with Tony starting the IRL.

Jason-

CART was in trouble before Tony came along. That's why he sat on the CART board for some five years, trying to get them to make some changes. (Million dollar engine deals, lease only, if you open it up, we'll never send you another one?)

Meanwhile, Tony was looking at the fact that his family income was based on one race, once a year, that was increasingly being filled with drivers whose names weren't familiar to Americans.

So he tried to change it. It was a good idea, as a dozen or so carmakers worldwide made engines that fit the formula. Unfortunately, CART won the PR battle, and Tony couldn't get enough manufacturers to commit to the series, using stock-block based engines.

CART is in big trouble now, in part because the new "owners" agreed to pick up most, if not all, of the debts owed in order to get the judge to agree that theirs was the "best deal." If they could pay those debts, it might be.

Meanwhile, CART's audience is in the tank. TV ratings are shot, and the big attendance numbers are artificially pumped up by the huge crowds they draw outside of the U. S. Inside, they aren't doing so well.

And, if NASCAR goes to Mexico (any bets on that?), CART will be facing the kind of marketing they've never in their wildest dreams been able to pull off.
