AHRA Nitro Showdown Experience

I know this should go in the straightliners section but didnt think enough people would see what all went down this weekend. I left Austin at 5:30 friday morning headed for Midland and got there at about 11:15. Found pops and he took me for a tour of the facility which is a really nice 1/8 mile facility. At this time the sun was shining and looking good then went down hill from there. The clouds came in, then we had a severe thunderstorm warning, tornado warning and flood warning. It started to rain, hail and send tornadoes down from clouds and it rained for about 3 to 4 hours straight and hard. When it finally let up we went and checked the track and it was under about 4 to 5 inches of water from the 100 ft mark to past the finish line. Then we started brooming at around 5 pm and didnt stop till about 1 in the morning and the track was dry and clean. Saturday dad and me got up at around 7 and started brooming and scraping and brooming the track and at 11 am the first car went down the track. At that time AHRA officials decided to move the nitro show to sunday trying to get more rubber on the track. On Sunday the sun came out and it was time to get down with 4 Top Fuel Dragsters, 2 Nostalgia Funny Cars, and 8 Pro Mods it was a show. Spencer Massey set a new track record at 3.47 @ 211 i think is what dad told me last night as I had to leave at 3 to be back in austin by 9. Here are some pics from the weekend which so some of the weather, the flood, the cleaning process and the cars.

after 6" of water/mud being removed from track fri nite and lifting the rubber off the track, track was biting hard.on autopromods.com forum the driver of the "money corvette" said it was the best prep'd track he'd run on in years.made my day and all the hard work worth it just to hear that.

I do enjoy watching the straightliners. I have some bud's that run in Marion. I just don't like the 1/8 th mile runs. Most of us go out to run & watch the full 1/4 mile. At the Snap On day at the races they shut us down to 1/8 because of the high winds blowing across the track. You just don't get the full effect of a 1/4 mile run. JMO Lenny66 B)
