Payne pockets Show-Me Shootout loot at LA Raceway

LA MONTE, Mo. (April 9) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour fired ‘em back Friday night at the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo., for the 4th Annual Show-Me Showdown and the season’s fourth event in the tough Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan Region.

Jeremy Payne has been hard to beat at the LA Raceway. In fact, in his three starts at the 3/8-mile oval, the only driver able to beat him is himself.

He captured the inaugural event in 2007 and appeared to have his second win in as many tries last August, but that one was erased when he was disqualified during post-race technical inspections and the win was awarded to Grant Junghans, who went on to capture the DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year Award.

On Friday night, the 24-year-old from Springfield, Mo., was dominant again as he led all 40 laps of the WIX Filters “A” Main to score his fifth career United States Modified Touring Series victory in front of a big audience and up against 65 other drivers in the toughest field of entries so far this season.

In four feature races at the track since 2007, the yellow flag has waved just once – on lap 11 of the 2008 affair. The other three were caution-free, including both of last year’s contests.

Friday night’s event saw just one caution in the 40-lap nightcap.

After disposing of Tommy Weder Jr. for second on lap 6, Tommy Myer closed in on Payne and hounded the leader for every lap of the race. With the white flag in the air, Myer moved to the high side of the track and made his move around Payne.

The pair powered out of turn 2 and sped side by side down the back-stretch and into turn 3. Payne inched ahead between turns 3 and 4, and crossed the finish line ahead of Myer with half a car-length to spare.

Jason Hughes clawed his way from ninth on the 26-car starting grid to finish third after a spirited battle with Kelly Shryock, who held on for fourth. Shryock won the 2008 race at La Monte when he passed Hughes for the lead with six laps to go.

Terry Phillips rounded out the top five finishes while Rodney Sanders, who captured his career-first USMTS win here last June, finished sixth and earned the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award after starting 15th.

Seventh through tenth, respectively, went to Jesse Stovall, Ryan Ruter, Jon Tesch and Dereck Ramirez.

Hughes expanded his points lead in the Falcon Wind Power Great Plains Region and now leads Shryock by 65 markers (414 to 349). Johnny Bone Jr. is third with 310 points, followed by Sanders (297), Tesch (295), Ramirez (283), Zack VanderBeek (280), Weder (255), John Allen (248) and Brian Bolin (248).

On Saturday, the 24 Raceway in Moberly, Mo., hosts the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour for the fourth time in three years.

The 2008 event at the 4/10-mile high-banked clay oval drew national attention with the first-ever tie to end a USMTS main event as Jon Tesch and Zack VanderBeek crossed the stripe in a dead heat. The limitations of human sight were removed last April with AMB Timing & Scoring in place, but this time Tesch rolled to a convincing win. The series returned in August last year with Michael Long capturing his career-first victory under the USMTS banner.

Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps slated for 6:30 and the first green flag scheduled to wave at 7. B-Modifieds, Sportsmans, Hobby Stocks and Hornets will also be on the racing card. The 24 Raceway is located 3.5 miles east of US 63 on US 24. For more information, call 573-881-8861 or visit www.24racewayinmoberly.com on the World Wide Web.
