Stone starts first full season

in promoter’s post at Cardinal

EUNICE, N.M. (March 5) – Cardinal Motor Speedway will continue to be W.H. Stone’s Saturday night home.

He’ll just be driving through the pit gates in another capacity this year.

The veteran race car owner and partner in Southwest Racing Specialties, title sponsor for IMCA’s Southern SportMod division, heads into his first full season as promoter of the ¼-mile black clay oval at Eunice.

“Cardinal has always been like a home track for us. This is already a pretty good facility. It’s got a nice set up so there aren’t a lot of changes planned,” said Stone, who was in charge of last October’s inaugural Southwest Shootout. “I do want to promote weekly and special events more. We’re going to try to boost our fan base.”

IMCA Modifieds headline Saturday night race cards, joined by IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and the Southern SportMods.

Opening night is March 20, with weekly shows scheduled through Aug. 28. Stone hopes to schedule a special for the IMCA divisions in late April or early May.

“We like having an established set of rules to use, and we like the economics of IMCA. A lot of this sport is affordability,” Stone said. “If you race a lot, money is an issue, but it costs a lot more to run outlaw or with another sanction.”

Cardinal is part of IMCA’s ButlerBuilt South Central Region for Modifieds and Stephenville Starter Southern Regions for Stock Cars and for Hobby Stocks.
