Thunder Mountain adding IMCA Southern SportMods

OLATHE, Colo. (March 4) – Thunder Mountain Raceway adds a third IMCA division to Saturday night race programs this season.

Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMods join IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars at Olathe, where opening night for points is April 24.

“We got interested in Southern SportMods after seeing them race at a couple other area tracks,” promoter Kathy German said. “They’re new, they’re affordable and they’re something different.”

“A bunch of guys are already planning to race in this class,” she added. “Most of them have raced a Modified or I-Stock before. We’ve got one going from a go-kart. They all look at this division as being cost effective.”

Thunder Mountain has $500 to win specials scheduled for Southern SportMods and for Stock Cars on July 3 and July 4, respectively. Modifieds square off in a $1,000 to win Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying tilt there on Aug. 21.

“This little track has come a long ways since last year,” German said. “We’ve got a good group of drivers, most of whom travel 20-40 miles one way to race here. They’ve stuck with this track through its ups and downs, and they’re really excited about this season.”

Final IMCA point races will be Sept. 25.

Modified points earned at Thunder Mountain also count in IMCA’s ButlerBuilt Western Region. Stock Car points figure toward Stephenville Starter Southern Region standings.
