Clonch grabbed the lead before going into turn 2. 8th place starter Jerry Aylor spun coming off 2 but kept going avoiding the caution. Lap 2 saw Troy Taylor challenging White for 2nd. The two battled side by side with Taylor getting the spot off turn 3. The top three settled in and started inching away from the pack that was still battling for positions. At lap 5 the top 5 was Clonch, Taylor, White, Trevor Lane and Bobby Ferring. On lap 6 Ferring moved up to challenge Lane for 4th. Ferring got the spot as they came under the flag stand going into lap 7. Lap 8 saw Clonch and Taylor with a slight lead over White as back in the pack Roy Ewing, Joe Findling, and James Creagh made it 3 wide for 13th. There was lots of tight racing through out the field with lots of 2 and sometimes 3 wide battles. At lap 12 Clonch had 2 car lengths lead over Taylor who had half a straight over White who had 1/2 a straight over Ferring. Back in the pack the battle for 12th spot was tight with Ewing, Mark McDaniel, TJ Green, Daryl Campbell, Findling, and Creagh battling for several laps all swapping positions within the tight running pack sometimes 3 wide. On lap 16 McDaniel and Ewing were side by side for the position with McDaniel getting the spot. At halfway the running order was Clonch, Taylor, White, Ferring, Justin McCoy, Billy Garza, Anthony Ohanlen, Brian Boram, Lane, Bobby Malchus, Randy Miller, Ewing, McDaniel, and Campbell. Clonch still in the lead caught lap traffic at lap 18 and began picking his way through with Taylor closing in slightly. With the wind blowing 20+ mph, the track was really drying out but staying smooth allowing Clonch to pass lap traffic on the bottom or in the middle. Clonch and Taylor still had a good lead over White who was secure in 3rd with half a straight lead over 4th place runner Ferring. Lap 23 saw Lane suffer a spin in turn 2 but Lane was able to complete a 360 and continue with no caution needed. With 10 laps to go the running order was Clonch, Taylor, White, Ferring, Garza, McCoy, Boram, Malchus, Ohanlen, Miller, Campbell, McDaniel, Ewing, Aylor, Green, and Findling. With the front runners now in heavy traffic, Taylor had really closed in on Clonch. Taylor seemed faster into the corners while Clonch was faster at the end of the straight away. This allowed Taylor to get his nose under Clonch in turns 1 and 2 around lap 27. Clonch was able to hold Taylor of as he made his way through traffic lapping nearly half the field. With 5 to go the running order was Clonch, Taylor, White, Ferring, Garza, Boram, McCoy, Miller, Malchus, Ohanlen, and Campbell. Some of the best SIMS drivers in the state had run nearly 34 and a quarter laps without caution! On the last lap, Findling and Cook got together and tangled up in turn 2 leaving Findling stalled with a left rear flat facing traffic bringing out the 1st and ONLY caution of this 35 lap main event! Findling was able to limp to the pits. On the restart for the green/white/checkered it was Clonch and Taylor with 4 lap cars between them and 3rd place runner White who had a lap car between he and Ferring, who also had a lap car between he and Garza, Miller, Boram, Ohanlen, Malchus, Campbell, McDaniel, Aylor, Ewing, Green, and McCoy. Clonch and Taylor quickly got away from the lap cars as did White. Within the two lap shoot out, the top 5 would remain the same. Meanwhile Campbell made an excellent run picking up 3 spots. Aylor also with a good run followed Campbell to pick up 4 spots while Miller dropped from 6th to 14th in the final laps! Tim Clonch in his Smileys Chassis sponsored by Bill Brown Tack Co. started outside front row and lead every lap on his way to Victory Lane! Troy Taylor in his John Mueller owned Smileys Chassis came from 6th to cross the line 2nd. Keith White started on the pole in a borrowed Smileys Chassis sponsored by Tracys Auto Sales and finished 3rd. Billy Garza sponsored by Madres Concina came from 9th to take 4th. Brian Boram came from 13th to round out the top 5. Daryl Campbell in his Destroyer Chassis sponsored by The Smoke Pit and Performance Transmissions had an awesome run starting 20th and charging his way through the tight field to finish 6th earning the SLIDER Hard Charger Award! The top 4 cars were teched heavily. Heads were pulled, cams measured, and the whole nine yards! This was the most detailed tech I have seen in a while! All were found legal with the exception of the 133 car of Bobby Ferring who was disqualified for an illegally altered rear suspension (trailing arms). The next SIMS Regional will be July 3, 2004 at Many Motor Speedway! Hats off to Bo, Linda, Michelle Rawdon and the entire Cowtown Speedway Crew for putting on a great show on a great track for the first SIMS Regional!
