(Feb. 9) – White Sands Speedway opens the gates for a new season this weekend, with a pair of IMCA Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod features headlining the Feb. 13-14 Winter Shootout program. Southern SportMods chase a $400 top check in the Saturday show at Tularosa, while a payout based on car count could send the winner home with as much as $3,000 on Sunday. First place on Valentine’s Day will pay a minimum of $1,000. A car count of 25 bumps that amount to $1,500, while 30 entries make the winner’s share $2,000 and a car count of 35 or more puts that prize at $3,000. IMCA national, Allstar Performance state and local track points will be given both nights. Pit gates open at 8 a.m., hot laps start at approximately 9 a.m. and racing begins at 10 a.m. both days of the Winter Shootout. Pit passes are $35 on Saturday and $40 on Sunday. Adult grandstand admission is $15 each day. Kids ages 6-10 get in for $6 and five and under will be admitted free. Gates open at 5 p.m. for a Friday, Feb. 12 open practice session. Pit passes are $20 and grandstand admission is free.
