Smith jr. Takes First Ever HCR Modified Win

Young, David Smith jr. from Lampasas took the first HCR IMCA Modified trophy Saturday afternoon winning the 20 lap main event on the 1/4 mile clay track. Smith jr, who won the first heat drew the pole for the 8 car race. On the first try for a green, Danny Reed got into the turn 4 wall to bring about a restart.

On restart number two, Smith jr. got out front while Eric Hughes, Tracey Fink and James Foster battled three wide for second. Fink spun in turn 2 and collected Jamie Campbell, while Greg Dinsmore got into the turn 2 wall. The third time was a charm as Smith jr. again grabbed the lead.

Lap 2 saw Fink and Foster swapping position at each end of the track as they battled for fourth. Randy Yount got around Hughes on lap 3 to get the second spot as Smith jr. started to ease away. Yellow was out on lap 6 when Reed found the wall again, this time in turn 2. Shortly after the restart, Hughes day came to an end when he went up in a cloud of smoke to slow the action on lap 7.

Smith jr. was just beginning to get away from Yount when caution flew on lap 9 for Reed who dropped the driveshaft in turn 3. On the restart, Fink and Foster made contact with Fink spinning and Foster pulling to the infield with a flat. Back under green and the race coming to halfway showing Smith jr., Yount, Campbell and Fink.

Fink and Campbell battled for third until lap 15 when Fink, who took the heat two win, retired to the pits. With five to go Smith jr. had put some distance on Yount who had a good margin back to Campbell. As the checkers flew it was Smith jr. in his Smith Construction/Lee Richtor Homes/Racing Engine Solutions/Cullen-Dixon/Skyrocket Chassis scoring the inaugural win.
