NickHolt
R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and its Winston brand have dropped the Winston No Bull 5 bonus program for 2003. Just a couple of years ago they dropped the Winston Racing Series sponsorship too. Sounds like R.J. Reynolds is pulling back from stock car racing a bit. Can't be a good sign for things to come. Jason
Winston has done a lot for NASCAR but if they leave another company like Coke or Pepsi will take its place... With NASCAR going even more mainstream (which isnt a bad thing since more fans are added) I think the television networks want a more family sponsor... tqj3
The various tobacco agreements have the effect of requiring the tobacco companies to reduce their involvement in sports. Generally, they were allowed to keep one sponsorship in each area, which is why Winston dropped both their NHRA series sponsorship and the Winston sponsorship of Angelle Savois: they preferred to stay in NASCAR. Jason is probably also right. As loyal as NASCAR is to the sponsors who got them where they are, as they go more mainstream, they will have to think about what kind of sponsors they would prefer. It's nice to think NASCAR is in that position, that of having sponsors from which to pick and choose, but it has long been rumored in the industry that there were sponsors lined up to take the place of Winston, should they pull out for any reason. The current economy may have reduced the number, but it's a good bet that NASCAR still has multiple choices. Welcome back, Jason. You're doing a heck of a job.
