NGK Spark Plugs Shootout @ Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track 4/3/04

By J M Hallas

Roanoke, Texas., The World of Outlaws Sprint Car series held it’s traditional NASCAR weekend event on the semi-banked 4/10 mile clay track with 30 of the winged wonders taking times. At the end it was an Aussie, Kerry Madsen from Sydney New South Wales Australian setting fast time with a lap of 14 seconds flat in his VerMeer Motorsports/TK Concrete/Twister Chassis. Jason Meyers, Jason Sides, Shane Stewart and Tyler Walker rounded out the five fastest drivers.

Kerry Madsen 14.000, Jason Meyers 14.003, Jason Sides 14.016, Shane Stewart 14.038, Tyler Walker 14.067, Kraig Kinser 14.084, Brooke Tatnell 14.100, Brian Paulus 14.103, Joey Saldana 14.117, Erin Crocker 14.131, Jonathon Allard 14.150, Steve Kinser 14.152, Randy Hannigan 14.166, Dean Jacobs 14.175, Toni Lutar 14.190, Blake Mallory 14.246, Brandon Wimmer 14.247, Daryn Pittman 14.268, Craig Dollansky 14.362, Aaron Berryhill 14.419, Donny Schatz 14.442, Paul McMahon 14.516, Donny Lasoski 14.654, Tim Shaffer 14.694, Brian Brown 14.764, Sammy Swindell 14.830, Jason Solwold 15.112, Cody Branchcomb 15.116,Travis Rilat 15.119, Brian Carlson 15.461

In heat race action, the eight lap events, sent the top six finishes to the Dashes and A-Main. In heat #1, Daryn Pittman got into turn 1 first, but it was Randy Hannagan leading out turn 4 on lap 1. Hannagan’s lead was short as Pittman blasted back by on the high side to get the lead and take the victory. On the final lap, The King, Steve Kinser put a slide job on Hannagan to grab second place. Fast qualifier, Madsen was only able to finish ninth and was relegated to the B-main.

Heat One; 10 cars

Daryn Pittman, Steve Kinser, Randy Hannigan, Brooke Tatnell, Kraig Kinser, Paul McMahon, Craig Dollansky, Brian Brown, Kerry Madsen, Cody Branchcomb

Heat #2 saw Sammy Swindell, get a huge jump on the start, but he slid up Dean Jacobs, Jacobs clipped him. Swindell did a half-spin and kept going, but WoO officials determined his start was too good and the yellow flew for a restart. As green flew, Walker was first into turn 1, while Craig Dollansky and Brian Paulus were wheel to wheel for second. Walker led lap 1, but the second place battle ran him down going three wide into turn 1 on lap 2. Paulus came out on top in that battle.

Swindell and Brandon Wimmer were in their own little fight, swapping slide jobs at opposite ends. On lap 6 Wimmer spun while dueling with Swindell. Wimmer stayed on the gas to try to continue, but as he came around he drove into Jacobs who did an easy roll onto his side. Paulus took off on the restart to get the win.

Heat 2 10 cars

Brian Paulus, Jason Meyers, Tyler Walker, Sammy Swindell, Danny Lasoski, Travis Rilat, Aaron Berryhill, Jonathon Allard, Brandon Wimmer, Dean Jacobs

The final heat race saw Local driver Blake Mallory and Toni Lutar go side by side into turn 1. Lutar got the top spot coming back to the line with Joey Saldana moving up into third. Donny Schatz sailed by both Mallory and Saldana to grab second on lap 2. Lutar ran off to a huge lead, while Sides, Stewart, Erin Crocker and Tim Shaffer to battle for the final transfer spot. It was the lady driver, Crocker coming up one position short at the checkers.

Heat 3 10 cars

Toni Lutar, Donny Schatz, Joey Saldana, Jason Sides, Tim Shaffer, Shane Stewart, Erin Crocker, Blake Mallory, Jason Solwold, Brian Carlson

In the first of the two, 5 lap dashes to set the starting positions in the A-main, it was three wide at the starting line for the lead. Paulus got the advantage and began to pull away. Stewart and Meyers had a battle going on for third as they swapped the positions on lap 2. Paulus took the easy win.

Brian Paulus, Kraig Kinser, Shane Stewart, Jason Meyers, Steve Kinser, Donny Schatz, Danny Lasoski, Toni Luter

Joey Saldana got the jump on the field at the start of dash #2 to lead the first circuit. Brooke Tatnell moved along side and got the top spot on lap 2, while Sides and Walker were side by side for third. Saldana took a shot at a slide job to retake the lead but came up short, falling back to second. Walker and Sides continued their little scrum and were joined by Pittman. Tatnell went on the take the victory.

Brooke Tatnell, Joey Saldana, Tyler Walker, Daryn Pittman, Jason Sides, Paul McMahon, Tim Shaffer, Randy Hannagan

Twelve cars started the 12 lap B-main with only the top six transferring to the main. The quick qualifier, Madsen and Jonathon Allard led the field to green. Madsen got a good start, but it was Allard on the low side shooting by for the top spot. Dollansky got by Madsen to move into second and wasted little time running down Allard.

Dollansky grabbed the point on lap 3, while Madsen and Jacobs were wheel to wheel for third with Brian Brown closing in. Brown put a slide job on Jacobs in turns1-2, Jacobs returned the favor in 3-4, Brown got back by Jacobs on lap 4 for good.

With Dollansky running away from the field, the only battle was Jacobs and Aaron Berryhill for fifth. Berryhill went by and hunted down Brown for fourth, getting past in the final laps. As the white waved, Dollansky had a full straightaway lead over Allard, and went on garner top honors.

Paulus Spoils Storybook Finish

Paulus and Tatnell paced the 24 car field to green for the start of the 30 lap A-main. As the flag waved, Rookie of the Year contender, Kraig Kinser moved from row 2 into the lead going into turn 1. As the top ten sorted out, there was still three and four wide racing back in the pack. K. Kinser got some space as Paulus and Tatnell ran side by side for second. Tatnell got the spot on lap 4 but Paulus fought back.

Allard brought on the yellow on lap when he went for a spin coming out of turn 4. Tatnell tried K. Kinser low on the restart, but K. Kinser held him off. Stewart and Meyers resumed their dash #1 battle, this time for fifth spot. The duo were still scrapping for the position on lap 10, while Swindell and Friday IROC winner, Danny Lasoski were mired in 16th and 17th respectively.

K. Kinser ran up on heavy traffic on lap 11, giving Tatnell the chance to close in. With K. Kinser on the high groove and Tatnell running low, the duo sliced through traffic, until K. Kinser cleared first and got a little breathing room. At halfway the top five were K. Kinser, Tatnell, Paulus, Stewart and Meyers.

Dollansky expired his motor on lap 17 and rolled to a stop on the track to bring out a caution. K. Kinser had Allard as a buffer as the race restarted, but Tatnell jumped Allard to soon as green waved. WoO officials determined Tatnell was trying to avoid Allard who got a bad restart so Tatnell was not sent back any positions for passing before the cone.

K. Kinser got a good jump on Tatnell as they restarted again, with two-three wide racing in the field behind them. Tatnell’s chance at challenging for the win went up in smoke, literally, on lap 20, when he blew up for the final yellow. K. Kinser once again had a lap between himself and now second place runner, Paulus as race resumed.

K. Kinser pulled away, while Stewart and Meyers were still a couple, now scrapping for third. With five to go the top five had spread out and it looked like the young K. Kinser was going to grab his first ever WoO A-Feature win, joining his dad, Steve and Uncle, Mark Kinser on the TMS Dirt Track list of winners. But wait.....

Paulus changed his line and started eating into K. Kinsers lead closing in every corner. Paulus caught K. Kinser on lap 28 and snuck by on the low to get the lead and ruin a good headline and story. Paulus got slowed by a lap car on the white flag lap, but K. Kinser was not close enough to capitalize. Paulus in his P&P Motorsports/Arnold Transportation/Hanks Performance Products/Kistler Powered/Maxim Chassis was able to grab the checkers and the $10,000 payday. The win was only the second A-Feature win for Paulus, his first coming at Hartford Speedway(Michigan) in 2003.
