Thank you Reb for helping out and handling the announcing. Sorry about the intermittent cut out on the mic. We'll get it checked out. Looks to be something with the main box.... Maybe a bad connection somewhere in the system.

Was great to see some mod drivers that haven't visited in a while and a couple of first time visitors. And a couple of new Super Stocks also...

Very nice gesture on Whiteaker's part to loan Brown the car as Brown was leading the points coming into the event.

South Texas Modified Championship Series @ Texana Raceway Park, 8/1/09

By J M Hallas

Edna, Tx.,(August 1st, 2009) The South Texas Modified Championship Series returned to Texana Raceway Park for it's second series event. Several new drivers out of East Texas looked to be spoilers for the series regulars on the semi-banked 5/16 mile clay track in the fifth race of the series, though after a rain out at I-37 Raceway only four have been contested.

It looked to be a bad night for series points leader Danny Brown when he hurt the motor during hot laps. In a show of true sportsmanship, Steve Whiteaker jr. who was third in points only 9 out of the series lead stepped up and out of his car giving it to Brown.

“That's what true sportsmanship is about,” said Brown.”I was done. We burned a piston or something in hot laps. Steve, who probably could have been able to win, told me to use his car. I really didn't want to. If I win the championship I owe it all to him.”

“I figured since I've been doing good in USMTS that I'd give Danny the chance to win this series,” added Whiteaker. “It will be a trophy for our shop.”

White Does Daily Double Again

In what seems to be more the norm, than unusual, Paul White showed why he is one of the areas top drivers. White, who has been hotter than the Texas weather, pulled off yet another nightly sweep taking both the Modified and Limited Modified feature wins. Could we be looking at another Texana bounty hunt coming in the near future?

As green waved on the Modified 20-lap A-main, White beat Benny Perry into turn 1, but Perry stayed along side out of turn 2. White secured the lead on lap 1, while Lawrence Mikulencak and Josh Majek ran side by side for third. With White easing away from Perry, Brown was able to get by Jesse Manning for sixth. Mikulencak moved in to challenge Perry for second, as Tracy Denby got along side and by Majek for fourth.

Brown then moved in on Majek in the battle for fifth. Coming to the crossed flags it was White, Perry, Mikulencak, Denby and Brown running in the top five. Brown and Denby ran side by side for fourth, with Denby holding the spot. The top three were separated by a car length as they put some distance on Denby, Brown and Majek.

Brown again got along side Denby for fourth and made the pass stick on lap 14. With two to go, White had only three car lengths on Perry who had Mikulencak back a car length and Brown closing quickly. White, in the Bridwell Motorsports, Engines by Adan & Jeff, Dust Devil Chassis, held that margin to the checkers.

Brown's fourth place finish added to his lead as, second in points, Dale Flanagan could only muster eighth. Mikulencak's third place points should see him jump past both Manning and Majek to third, with Whiteaker only taking show up points.

“We have a pretty consistent car right now,” replied White “We've been coming here quite a bit. Really we try something new nearly every night. We have it narrowed down to where we know what we like.”

We'd like to think that we can read this track better as much as we come here. When the traveling cars show up here, they see so many tracks that don't have to guess at that stuff. The have “store bought” cars that they can draw on for information. These cars are basically homemade cars. Jim(Chapman) built both of these cars and we can't go to anyone”

“We have a nice base line that we go back to on the features. We make sure we're at least as fast as we know we can be come feature time. In the heats or hot lapping we do try other stuff and a lot times we just have to go back to our same old reliable set up. So we're not coming back with something different and getting faster, sometimes we get slower. But, we're leaning something by it either way.”

“Keith and I don't talk about bragging rights. We take the grandkids over the grandparents for dinner every Sunday evening and talk about how to make our cars go faster. I may or may not go run against him at the SportMod Nationals. With IMCA you have to buy a license and it's not really worth it for one race. Bruce(Tesch) might have a big money race for us here that weekend, too.”

The start of the 20-lap Limited Modified feature saw Mickey Helms come out of turn 2 with the lead. In the field Victor Lindsey and Aaron Lunsford hooked bumper causing a back up that saw Hunt Harrison pit with a flat, and Jacob Burnett's night end with read end problems. Lindsey and Lunsford unhooked but were slow enough to bring out a yellow.

On the restart Paul White got past Shane Hoefling for second, with Vince Louden following, but giving the spot back. White used the high groove to get along side Helms on lap 3 and grab the point on lap 4. As the field sorted out and came to halfway it was White pulling away from Helms, Hoefling Brian Brooks and Lunsford.

With five laps to go, White had increased his margin to a full straightaway over Helms. White's only remaining challenge was lapped traffic. On lap 18 White was nearly three wide with two slower cars, but backed out. Those two cars got together in front of White on front stretch, with White sneaking by unscathed. Lindsey brought out caution on the final lap sliding down the front straight. White blasted off on the one lap run to the checkers in the Bridwell Motorsports, Engines by Jeff & Adan, Dust Devil Chassis.

Mike Davenport beat GW Hessong into turn 1 for the lead as green waved on the Super Stock feature. Going into turn 3 Sonny Hammond tagged Hessong sending him around to bring about a complete restart, with Hammond going to the back. This time Hessong held off Davenport in turn 1, but Davenport used the top side to get around Hessong to lead lap 1.

Ron Sprayue, in his first run on dirt, looped his new ride in turn 2 to bring out a caution. As green waved again, Hessong gave Davenport a look low, as Hammond got by Lucky Gilbert for third. Hammond then got along side and by Hessong for second on lap 3. Hammond quickly ran down Davenport and snared the top spot on lap 5.

Sprayue, still trying to work the bugs out his new car, spun again when the steering lock up on lap 8. Once back to green Hessong was able to get past Davenport for second, but was unable to challenge Hammond in the final laps as he easily took the victory.

Johnny Thomas led the Hot Stock Truck feature going into turn 1, but John Lieta got by in turn 3 to lead lap 1. in the pack, Bob Ort, Lary Paris and Justin Bloom were three wide for third until Bloom spun in turn 2, but kept moving with no caution. Thomas gave Lieta a challenge on lap 2, but Lieta held steady. Bloom's troubles continued when he lost a wheel, that took itself to the pits, while Bloom rolled to a stop.

On the restart, Ort got into Thomas who spun in turn 2. Thomas got his spot back, with Ort sent to the tail for the restart. Once back under green the lead quartet got away clean, with Ort quickly back up to fourth. Thomas again gave Lieta some pressure, but was unable to get by as Lieta inched ahead. Lieta held off Thomas for the win with Ort sneaking by Paris for third on the last lap.

Polesitter Chris Shafer got out front in the 20-lap Bomber feature, with Nic Priem, Janet Perks and Jason Fox three wide for third. As Shafer and Brian King began to edge away, Priem used the bumper to get past Perks for third. The field got strung out through the middle stages, but a caution for debris on lap 13 rebunched the pack.

Priem used the high side to get by King for second on the restart and got along side Shafer briefly. Priem's run to the front ended when he lost a wheel in turn 2 and was forced to pit. Once back under green, Shafer inched away from King who held a good margin over Perks in third. At the checkers it was Shafer giving his father the best 82nd birthday present of all, a feature win and trophy.

Zach Tesch grabbed the early lead of the Jr. Mini Stock feature with Jason Bloom, Lauren Chamberlain and Ashley Perks in pursuit. Tesch got squeezed by a lapped into the infield giving Bloom an opening to grab the lead on lap 5. Tesch again had trouble getting by slower car giving up spots to Chamberlain and Perks. Perks was able to snag second from Chamberlain, but no one had anything for Bloom as he added another win to his young career.
