Bruce Litton ready to open championship run at IHRA Amalie Oil Texas Nationals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Bruce Litton has always been regarded as one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, but for a period of 4.6 seconds, he’s meaner than a wildcat having a bad day. The Lucas Oil-sponsored driver turns into an animal when it comes time to qualify and compete in final eliminations of IHRA Top Fuel. This weekend’s IHRA season-opener, the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals presented by Ancira Cars, Trucks and RVs at San Antonio, Texas, is guaranteed to bring out the beast in the mild-mannered enclosed trailer dealership owner from Indianapolis.

Our copy may have all the insinuations of a Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde personality for the 320-mile per hour Litton, who was once voted by his peers as the Sportsmanship Award Winner, but nothing can be further from the truth.

“Well being a mean person is not in my nature at all,†explained Litton. “But, you have to put all the friendships and everything aside when you roll into the staging beams. There’s entirely too much at stake and we are very committed to making a run for the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series Top Fuel crown.â€

Listed in the Top Ten of the IHRA’s all-time winningest Top Fuel drivers, Litton was the only driver to defeat multi-time World Champion Clay Millican in competition during the 2004 season. Millican has only lost three races in the past two seasons, and two of them have come at the hands of Litton.

Two out of three ain’t bad, as the old adage mandates, but for Litton he wants to break the stranglehold that the Werner Enterprises-sponsored driver has had on the class.

“Clay’s had enough fun at our expense and we’ve really stepped it up to the next level,†explained Litton. “If you want to beat Clay, that’s where you have to be. We have had a lot of preparation during the off-season.â€

Then there’s the new kids on the block, the injected-nitro combination which has been graduated to the pro ranks from the sportsman pecking order of Top Alcohol Dragster.

“I think it will bring us more entries and add a bit of controversy,†added Litton. “The bottom line is that it doesn’t matter what the IHRA brings in, we all have to beat them and the rest of the class to win the whole deal.â€

Reaching the quarter-finals at the NHRA Gatornationals was a good start.

Qualifying for the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals kicks off on Friday and concludes on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
