ASCS Sooner Region Opens Season Saturday at Creek County!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (April 20, 2009) – The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region fires off its ninth season of competition this Saturday night at the place where it all began, atop Creek County Speedway's semi-banked ¼-mile clay oval just southwest of Tulsa.

Not only did Sapulpa's Creek County Speedway host the initial ASCS Sooner Region event in 2001, the track served as the home venue for the American Sprint Car Series in its fledgling years of the early 1990's.

And the popular notion that Creek County Speedway offers up a wealth of action within its tight quarters still holds true too, as evidenced by Sean McClelland's dramatic charge from nine rows deep to capture his second series score at Creek County last June.

While the 2005 series champion cracked victory lane at Creek County last year along with Gary Taylor in September and Jason Johnson during Speedweek, it's younger brother Brian McClelland that begins his title defense on Saturday night.

Brian McClelland edged Kermit, TX, native Kolt Walker by just seven points for the 2008 ASCS Sooner Region championship, making it two titles in a row after topping Kevin Ramey by 25 markers for the 2007 crown.

While vying for an unprecedented third Sooner Region title, McClelland will also try to reel in the inaugural ASCS Lone Star title in 2009. One of several drivers expected to contend for both the Sooner and Lone Star crowns, McClelland escaped the opening weekend of Lone Star competition ranked fourth.

One of McClelland's five career ASCS Sooner Region triumphs has taken place at Creek County Speedway, that occurring in the title stretch of the 2007 season.

Brian will lead a stout field of title contenders into Saturday night's card, with other challengers including the likes of Tulsa-area shoe Sherman Davis, Oklahoma City representative Joe Wood, Jr., Texan Matt Clevenger and Show-Me-Staters Kyle Bellm and Brad Graham among others.

Several Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Series contenders are likely to drop in as well.

Saturday's action at Creek County Speedway, the 123rd event in ASCS Sooner history and 15th at Creek County, is set to go green at 6:00 p.m.

Creek County Speedway is located southwest of Tulsa off I-44 Exit 211, then 0.3 miles south on SR 33, then one mile west on SR 66. For more information, contact the track at 918-247-6675.

The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region is slated for a dozen nights of racing action at six different tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri in 2009.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.
