Sprint Cars

A short field of 10 Sprint Cars started the 20 lap main, with multi-time Abilene Speedway Champion, Russ Fletcher drawing the number one spot. Fletcher quickly got the top spot from Kolt Walker in turn 1. Lap 2 saw Elmer Morgan move third, while Wallker tried to stay with Fletcher on the high side. By lap five the top four had separated themselves apart from the battle for fifth between Jim Gracy, Benjamin Broyles, Dennis Smith, Larry Crenshaw and Sam Hafertepe.

On lap 7 Smith slid up and tapped the wall, but was able to continue. Morgan reeled in Walker in on lap 9, as Fletcher continued to blast away. At the mid-point it was Fletcher with a commanding lead, Walker, Morgan, Gracy and Broyles holding the top five spots. With five to go Fletcher caught the pack battling for fifth on back. As the white flew, the two-time IMCA SuperNationals Sprint Champion, Fletcher held a full straightaway lead going on to get a fairly easy victory in his Hanner Chevrolet/WTSSE/Sullivans Powder Coating/Ringo Drilling Co./Danz Designs/Sanford Race Engines/ J&J Chassis.

The 20 lap, 20 car IMCA modified A-main started with Steve Hayes and Dale Sudberry on the front row. Hayes got the jump on green to lead lap 1. Former IMCA Modified National Champion quickly moved along side from his fourth starting spot to challenge Hayes for the lead. Witt grabbed the point on lap 2 bring Scotty Cook and Robby Edwards along to seond and third. Cook and Edwards ran side by side as the top three inched ahead.

Cook took a look inside Witt on lap 4,but was unable to get by. By lap 5 Glen Hibbard had charged up from his 6th row start to fifth. Cook continued pressuring Witt with an occasional bumper shot in the corner. Hibbard took fourth from Sudberry on lap 6, while a three car battle waged for 6th between Josh McGaha, Hayes and Mark Patterson.

At the halfway point the top five were Witt, Cook, Edwards, Hibbard and Sudberry with Hibbard closing on the lead trio. By lap 14 Witt had gained a slight advatage as Hibbard caught Edwards and Cook. With five to go there was a nine car fight going on for 7th. Edwards chance at a top three finish ended on lap16 when he slowed and pulled off.

The races only caution flew on lap 18 when David Davis spun after contact with Trevor Egbert. This set up a two lap shoot-out for the win. As green flew Witt slowed going intothe corner and got a good shot from Cook, both continued with no major damage, but the yellow came back out for debris. Cook gave Witt some room on the next start with Witt getting a small lead. McGaha was able to move under Hibbard, who was trying the high groove, tograb third.

As the checkers fell it was Witt piloting the JR Rice Memorial Special sponsored by Dick Scott Ford/Centex GMC/Affiliated Auto Glass/Midwest Motorsports/Wilson Chassis Co./Bartell Motorsports/Allied Race Wheels/HOT Chassis to the win.
