(Feb. 21) – Phil Penney and Dan Fitzgerald both went home winners Saturday afternoon. Penney, from Percival, Iowa, won the final event in the Barnett Harley-Davidson Winter Series at Canyon Raceway. Las Vegas, Nev., pilot Fitzgerald, meanwhile, wrapped up the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified tour title with an eighth-place run. Fitzgerald notched a win and finished no lower than fifth in any of the first six series events, earning a $1,000 share of the $5,000 point fund to be paid out to the top 15 drivers. Two-time feature winner Christy Georges was runner-up in points, with Chris Olexiewicz, Jerry Harpole Jr. and Jim Collinsworth completing the top five. The Winter Series crown is Fitzgerald’s career first. Also winning features over the course of the seven-week series were Ronnie Wallace, David Murray Jr. and George Fronsman.
