STOCK CAR TO OPEN STATE HIGHWAY 114 FREEWAY SATURDAY

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (February 5, 2004) – Cars of the Team Texas High Performance Driving School regularly help race fans fulfill their dreams by driving around Texas Motor Speedway. One of the school’s NASCAR machines driven by owner Mike Starr will help north Texas residents fulfill their dream during the Grand Opening of the freeway segment of State Highway 114 Saturday in Southlake.

Starr will cut the Grand Opening ribbon at speed in the Team Texas Chevrolet race car Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. with music and displays followed by the formal Grand Opening ceremony at 10:15 a.m. The ceremonies will be held on the yet-to-be-opened State Highway 114 at Carroll Avenue in Southlake. The six expressway lanes will be opened to the general public later in the weekend.

The opening of the freeway segment of State Highway 114 will complete a four-phase, $72.5 million project on six miles of expressway through Southlake. The highway is the main artery between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Texas Motor Speedway.

“The completion of this segment of State Highway 114 is a significant step in improving access to one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States,” said Texas Motor Speedway General Manager Eddie Gossage. “The opening of the freeway through Southlake is a move toward the completion of an expressway that will allow race fans to travel from Dallas to Texas Motor Speedway without stop lights.”

The first 500 children to attend Saturday’s Grand Opening can make handprints that will be permanently displayed in the highway’s landscaping. Several of the bridges on the new highway sport specially painted murals depicting the history of the area.
