Logue, Elliott win Wednesday Modified qualifiers at Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 3) – John Logue will be in the hunt for a record-setting sixth IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals championship, while Mark Elliott put himself in position for a shot at his first.

Both won 20-lap qualifying features Wednesday night, to earn spots in Saturday’s main event at Boone Speedway.

The top four from each qualifier advance to a special Thursday dash to determine how they’ll line up on the inside row come Saturday.

Logue paced the first race ahead of Mike Mullen, Sean Jerovetz and Scotty Brown. Elliott took the checkers in the second race ahead of Jay Noteboom, Mike Hansen and Mark Noble.

Now qualified for his 17th Super Nationals Modified main event, Logue caught Art Siefert for the front spot following three early re-starts. Mullen and Jerovetz settled into second and third, respectively, on lap six while Brown slipped into the top four on the final circuit.

The race was red-flagged with three laps to go after Dan Ratajczak flipped on the backstretch after contact with another car while racing for fourth.

Ratajczak had gotten upside down spectacularly at the end of last year’s main event. After winning his eight-lap heat, he’d gone 25 laps at Boone between flips.

Elliott made his own move to the front, from the fifth starting position, after a pair of early cautions, and led to the checkers.

He ran with Noteboom well ahead of the rest of the field, and while Noteboom made it a closer contest in the final laps, he couldn’t get past and Elliott crossed the stripe two car lengths ahead.

Noble, a three-time champion and now a 15-time qualifier for the big show, moved up from the 11th starting spot.

Mullen will start his first Saturday night show. Hansen is in for the second time, Brown, Elliott and Jerovetz each for the third and Noteboom for the fifth.

Logue won at Super Nationals in 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003. Steve Jackson of Des Moines is a five-time champion in the Stock Car division.

Modified qualifying got underway with 304 entries from 22 states and Canada; winners from 40 heats advanced to one of the two qualifying features.

The 26th annual Super Nationals has had a total of 685 cars compete thus far, with Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods seeing this first action on Thursday.
