Portis, Snellenberger pace Stock Car qualifiers

 

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 1) – Veterans Larry Portis and Rod Snellenberger won Stock Car qualifying features Monday at Boone Speedway, on opening night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.

 

The two will square off in a Tuesday night dash to determine which will start on the pole in Saturday’s main event. The top five from each Monday qualifier will make up the inside row in that race.

 

Colton Osborn chased Portis to the checkers in the first feature, with 2002 champion Larry Silbaugh, 2006 Hobby Stock king Dustin Smith and Travis Van Straten advancing as well.

 

Scored behind Snellenberger were Mike VanGenderen, David Smith, Rick Mees and Trent Murphy. Snellenberger raced from the 13th spot for the victory, while VanGenderen came from 14th and Mees from 19th. Wayne Gifford was the second car across the finish line but was disqualified from the post-race tech tent for an illegal carburetor.

 

Osborn, Mees and Murphy all made the big Stock Car show for the first time, Dustin Smith for the second straight year and VanStraten, Snellenberger and VanGenderen each for the fourth time.

 

Silbaugh will start his fifth main event, while Portis and David Smith are both in the big dance for the sixth time in their respective careers.

 

The same format of heat races and qualifying features will be used Tuesday to determine Saturday’s inside row of 10.

 

Monday’s program saw 171 IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars in action, up four from last year’s count, with competitors coming from nine different states.

Boeckman wins pole start for Saturday Hobby Stock main

 

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 1) – Andy Boeckman will start from the pole Saturday night, in his quest for a fourth IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals Hobby Stock championship.

 

Already the owner of 2003, 2005 and 2007 titles, Boeckman won the first qualifying feature Monday night at Boone Speedway to earn the inside row one start.

 

Tim Rupp will take the green flag from the front of the middle row, after leading flag to flag in Monday’s second qualifier.

 

Lining up behind Boeckman will be Beau Kaplan, Kyle Timmerman, Nyle Godwin, Robby Marsh, Terry Shaffar, Randy Roberts, Kyle Robinson and Pat Mather.

 

Shannon Anderson gave up an eighth place finish in hopes of securing a better starting spot Tuesday; Leonard Loftus was disqualified from ninth place after failing to report to post-race tech.

 

Second on back in the middle row will be Travis Prochaska, Chris Luloff, Kenneth Hansen, Brandon Pruitt, Ron Manthey, Josh Irvine, Alan Van Gorp and Tim Wilcox.

 

Marsh, Robinson, Rupp, Prochaska, Manthey and Van Gorp all made the feature field for the first time. Kaplan, Timmerman, Roberts, Luloff, Pruitt and Irvine each made their second career shows.

 

Third-time qualifiers are Godwin, Hansen and Wilcox. Mather qualified for his career fourth main event, Boeckman and Shaffar each for their fifth.

 

Opening night car count for the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks was 136, half a dozen ahead of the total for 2007. Entries came from eight states.

 

Last-chance races and a final qualifier will determine the outside row of nine tonight.
