ASCS Gulf South Set for Weekend of Speed

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 26, 2008) – The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region is set to celebrate the Labor Day holiday weekend in grand fashion with three full nights of action in south Texas.

The ASCS Gulf South Weekend of Speed kicks off Friday night at Corpus Christi's South Texas Speedway, moves on to Edna's Texana Raceway Park on Saturday night and the concludes at Cleveland's 105 Speedway on Sunday night.

Each feature event offers up a $2,000 winner's cut, with the weekend's top point earner picking up a $300 bonus to make a possible weekend take of $6,300. And with the Friday and Saturday features paying a minimum of $400 to start along with Sunday night's $300 to start money, a driver can earn at least $1,100 by starting all three main events.

In addition to the $1,000 point fund to be jockeyed for among the weekend's top five in points, the ASCS Gulf South season championship hangs in the balance as well with 17 of 22 events in the books.

Leading the way into the Weekend of Speed is defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, who moved atop the series point charts with a pair of podium finishes this past weekend.

Berryman has a 26-point edge over 2006 series champion Gary Watson of Beaumont, who is just one marker ahead of Texas City's Greg Rilat, a three-time series runner-up.

Channelview's Chris Sweeney enters the weekend ranked fourth, 106 points off the lead pace, with Conroe's Tommy Bryant rounding out the current top five. The balance of the current top ten includes Travis Elliott (Alvin, TX), 17-year-old Channin Tankersley (Highlands, TX), Travis Knighton (Danbury, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX) and Michael McNeil (Alvin, TX), with Shreveport's Terry Monroe just nine points outside of the top ten.

A dozen different drivers have reached ASCS Gulf South victory lane thus far in 2008, with only three drivers posting multiple wins. While Berryman has notched a pair of wins, Jason Johnson and Tankersley have each recorded three victories. Single wins have been claimed by Watson, Greg Rilat, Sweeney, Bryant, Ryan Hall, Jack Dover, Michael Dupuy, Bryn Gohn and Kolt Walker.

Friday's action at South Texas Speedway fires off at 7:30 p.m., Saturday's card at Texana Raceway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's event at 105 Speedway gets under way at 7:00 p.m.
