Slick Yoemans

He still runs High Point Auto Salvage in North Carolina. The last time we talked to him, he had some racing stuff, but was selling. He is about 52 or 53 years old now. One of the drivers I crew for talks just about daily with him on the one of the salvage parts boards.

this guy is arguably the best racer we have ever seen in this Texas area. Sure do miss watching that old #24 . Glad to hear Slick is doing ok. Funny this came up, going through some old stuff this week I found a Slick Yoemans #24 cap from TIDA and the black t-shirt with all the cahampions name on the back. :)

I was in North Carolina about a year ago and saw Justin Labonte running in a late model race. Talked to him and his grandfather before the races. When I was in the pit I noticed the hauler was actually Slick's. I guess he is still helping the Labonte family. I have also heard he still has a Late Model in his shop. Can't tell you whether or not he plans to run next season, but it sure would be cool to see him racing somewhere.

If it is the car I'm thinking of, it's a 3 or 4 year old All-Pro car. I don't remember him running it last year, and maybe only a couple times in 2002.

Like some have stated here, he was as good as anyone in this state. Used to spend a lot of time with him, especially when he ran Austin on Fridays in the early 80's.

Lori mentioned Butch Lake; I have seen both ends of the spectrum with his motors.

I remember once being pissed at Slick--Lake was late getting one of their motors ready, and Slick and his car owner Alan Yates, who was a whole 'nother thread by himself, drove up from Corpus to get it. We are working on Lee Machen's Chevelle at his shop in Del Valle when Slick and Yates show up. A trip from Corpus to Austin was about a fifth of Wild Turkey for Yates. Slick had heard enough of Yates driving up there, Mac didn't want any part of it either, so I got volunteered to drive Yates up to Lake's shop on North Lamar.

That was the longest trip I ever made in my life with the crap I had to listen to. And it wasn't enough to go straight there, we had to detour through East 11th street-you Austin residents know this area-so Yates could mess with the hookers over there. 3 hours from Mac's to 11th to Lake's, and back to Mac's shop. I cussed Slick for a month over that one.............

for those that didn't know Alan Yates has since passed away. Tom, you are more than correct about a whole other thread just for Yates. Anyone that has ever met him will never forget him. To hear him and Tony Coonrod talk old racing stories was just a blast for me. Most everyone talks about the imfamous double white flag race at Midland, when Slick lost the race to Tommy Grimmes and Yates was needless to say unhappy at TIDA management.

Wild-

I have one of those "talk to text" computer programs, and my family is after me to put all these stories to text. I've been kinda thinking about how to categorize everything, but Yates would definitely be a chapter by himself.

I can think of someother characters around here that would also rate their own chapter. "Moose" Bowen, the track welder from years past, would be one, some of the crap our race team has pulled would be a large chapter, Texas World Speedway would be a chapter, and so on.

Some folks out there would never believe one person or group of persons could have ever been involved in that much different stuff, but I gotta say we have had more than our share of fun, and I think it would be an entertaining read....

txtom,

I think that would be fantastic. You have one of the richest racing backgrounds around and are still young enough to recall most of it - unlike some of us (Where did I put my car keys? checkbook? viagra?). LOL

If you need any help with editing, deleting etc, just let me know. I'm told I'm good at it. LMFAO

Slick got V-6's from Roush for awhile. When Busch Grand National went back to V-8 engines a bunch of years ago, It left a slew of V-6 engines with not many places to go. A former crew-man of Slicks, Steve Lloyd, or "Animal" as Yates called him, works at Roush, has for years. I don't remember the specifics, but they could drive up to Michigan and buy a V-6 short-block far cheaper they could build one. I seem to remember short-blocks for $4500-5000, but don't quote me on that one. And these were the real deal, all that expensive machine work already done, and top-shelf parts.

One of the last V-6 cars around here was an ex-Yoemans car driven by Jeremy Stafford of Corpus, but haven't seen it lately. Don't know if it can be run in ROMCO, legally or competitively.

Nick, are you SURE you want me to do it?? Remember, one chapter will be "Texas World Speedway", and I remember some of the things YOU were involved in...............

I knew Brent-44SS- had been a little quiet lately....................

Actually, my wife decided since I was hanging around the house, I might as well take care of her "honey-do" list. After seeing the list, I figured going back to work was easier. So I start another job on Feb 2. Still working on airplanes, but a way better deal than the last one. So my little vacation from the working world is rapidly coming to an end.

Nick, If I do this writing project, everything goes. No editing or deleting. Your younger sordid past will come back to haunt you!! The younger readers on this board will find out you are not the mild-mannered administrator you portray!! :D

It is possible that Donnie's first car or so was an old Slick car, but I do know when Donnie started around here, he was getting help from the same guy (Larry Keys) who built a lot of Slick's stuff over the years.

I know I am late to reply on this thread, but I spoke with Slick a few weeks back. He told me he was selling everything. As far as Justin goes, look for him in the Busch series next year, probably not on a full time basis, but he should be there.

Oh yeah, hello everyone!!! :P
