ASCS Gulf South Reaches Midway with Weekend Double!

 

 

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 16, 2008) – Closing in on the season's midway point, the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region is set for another pair of south Texas events this weekend with the Seventh Annual Texas vs. Louisiana Challenge.

 

 

 

The weekend marks the third Golden Triangle Raceway Park-Houston Raceway Park double of the season for the ASCS Gulf South Region, with the series taking to Beaumont's Golden Triangle Raceway Park on Friday night before moving on to Baytown's Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night.

 

 

 

ASCS Gulf South veteran Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, continues his pursuit of a first series title, extending his lead to 64 points through the opening ten events of the season. Twenty-four events are on the slate, with the series reaching the midway point upon the completion of this weekend's action.

 

 

 

Sweeney is chased by 2006 series champion Gary Watson of Beaumont, TX, with three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX, just another four points back in third. Seventeen-year-old Channin Tankersley of Highlands, TX, who topped the series most recent event in Beaumont, is 92 points out of the lead in fourth, with defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, just four points behind Tankersley in fifth. Berryman topped the series last outing at Houston Raceway Park and then added a second win in the series most recent event at Cleveland's 105 Speedway on June 7.

 

 

 

Tommy Bryant of Conroe, TX, enters the weekend ranked sixth, with the balance of the top ten including rookie shoe Travis Elliott (Alvin, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX), Terry Monroe (Shreveport, LA) and Travis Knighton (Danbury, TX).

 

 

 

Friday's action at Golden Triangle Raceway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's card at Houston Raceway Park firing off at 7:00 p.m.

 

 

 

Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 near Beaumont, TX. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.

 

 

 

Houston Raceway Park is located east of Houston on I-10 to Exit 798, then three miles south on State Road 146, then 0.8 miles southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565. For more information, contact the track at 281-383-7223.

 

 

 

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 24 nights of racing action at ten different tracks throughout Texas and Louisiana in 2008.

 

 

 

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with a dozen different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
