ASCS Coastal vs. Gulf South Showdown at Fast Trax on Saturday

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (April 14, 2008) – Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, LA, is gearing up for its first Sprint Car spectacular of the year with this Saturday night's American Sprint Car Series Coastal vs. Gulf South Region showdown atop the ¼-mile dirt oval.

Saturday's Seventh Annual Gulf South Spring Nationals marks the first of two Regional showdowns pitting the Coastal forcers versus the Gulf South at Fast Trax Speedway, with a rematch set for September.

And, in the early stages of the 2008 season, both Regions will likely have a new points leader following Saturday's event.

Beaumont, TX, racer Gary Watson, the 2006 ASCS Gulf South champion, enters Saturday's card as the leading series title contender. But not by much, as he's just four points of Channelview, Texas' Chris Sweeney, with three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat of Texas City just another six points back.

Other top ASCS Gulf South contenders include 17-year-old Channin Tankersley (Highland, TX), 2005 Gulf South champion Ray Allen Kulhanek (Willis, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX), defending series champion Brandon Berryman (Missouri City, TX), Jimmy Brooks (College Station, TX), Tommy Bryant (Conroe, TX) and rookie contender Travis Elliott (Alvin, TX).

Amite, Louisiana's Michael Dupuy reigns as the defending ASCS Coastal Region champion after outdistancing Michael Herrington and Biloxi's Shane Morgan for the 2007 title. After finishing fourth in 2007 ASCS Coastal Region points, Todd Fayard of Saucier, MS, enters Saturday as the top-ranked title contender after a strong run in the series season opener versus the ASCS Rebel Region at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, AL, on February 9.

Saturday's racing action is set to go green at 6:00 p.m.

The semi-banked, ¼-mile Fast Trax Speedway clay oval is located four miles southeast of SR 34 in Chatham, LA, on SR 4. For more information, contact the track at 318-325-4568 or 318-249-2443.

The ASCS Coastal Region 2008 slate consists of 15 events at nine different tracks throughout Mississippi and the surrounding area including portions of Alabama, Louisiana and Florida.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 26 nights of racing action at eleven different tracks throughout Texas and Louisiana in 2008.

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with 14 different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
