Inaugural South Texas Winter Nationals @ South Texas Speedway, 11/15-17/2007

By J M Hallas

Corpus Christi, Tx.(Nov. 15th, 2007) The United States Modified Touring Series, Southern Division made it's first trip to "The Dirt Track" @ South Texas Speedway for the Inagural Winter Nationals. Some of the nationals top drivers towed in from six states, as well as statewide from Texas to stake their claim as first-tme winners on the semi-banked 1/4 mile dirt track. Southern Series points leader, Kelly Shryock from Fertile, Iowa, headed the list of stars battling in the final races for the title. Wheatland, Oklahoma's, Randy Timms trailed Shryock by 101 points coming into the nights action.

Hughes Outhustles Teammate Weder for Thursday Night Win

With the top eight in passing points redrawing for position, Tommy Weder jr. grabbed the number one spot flanked by Scott Green. Shryock drew the three pill, while Timms, who was relegated to one the B-mains, started seventh row inside. As green waved on the 35 lap A-main, Weder was first into turn 1 while Shryock and Green ran side by side for second. Weder took command of the lead on lap 1 as Chris Brown and Greg Skaggs ran wheel to wheel for fourth, as well as Jason HUghes and Paul White for sixth.

Brown slipped on lap 2 giving up two spots to White and Hughes. Once by Brown the duo was once again side by side, this time for fifth. Hughes finally took the spot and wasted little time getting by Skags for fourth. Hughes continued his charge and was challenging Green for third as the top ten sorted out single file. Yellow waved on lap 6 when Steve Miller spun during contact with Nicholas Littlejohn.

On the restart, Green got by Shryock for second, with Hughes following into third. Shryock lost another position on lap 7 when Skaggs got past for fourth. Young local hotshoe, Steve Whiteaker jr. used his track experience to move up from row eight to battle with Steve Holzkamper on lap 8 for ninth. That fight continued giving Timms the chance to sneak under Whiteaker on lap 11. Four laps later, the spot was still being contested between the three.

Holzkamper brought out yellow on lap 16 as he slowed on the back stretch with a flat tire. After pitting, Holzkamper returned to action. As green waved, Hughes got around Green, but Miller and Larry Clevenger tangled collecting Joey Heinaman to bring caution quickly back out. Finally back to green it was Hughes again jumping Green for second and on the bumper of teammate, Weder for the lead. At halfway it was Weder, Hughes, Green, Shryock and Skaggs in the top five while White was getting past Brown for sixth.

Lap 18 saw Whiteaker, Timms and Brown three wide for seventh, while local veteran, Lawrence Mikulencak caught that group. Mikulencak got by Whiteaker on lap 19 for ninth. T J Huston brought out caution on lap 20 when ended up on top of turn 4 near the wall. On the restart, Hughes was trying the high side of Weder for the lead. The two made slight contact with Hughes getting the advantage on lap 21 despite having the door skin hanging partially off. White's night ended early on lap 22 when he broke and pulled off from his top ten spot.

Skaggs, who gave up a spot to Shryock, retook fourth on lap 23, while Brown and Rodney Sanders ran wheel to wheel for ninth. Hughes began inching away with ten laps to go as the top four separated apart. The field had just strung out into single file when the final yellow waved for debris from Hughes car. Under caution, USMTS officials removed the rest of the dangling sheet metal and Hughes retained the top spot.

Once green waved, Shryock tried to get the jump on Green and Weder, but failed while Whiteaker moved up to fifth. Hughes quickly rebuilt a lead over Weder, as felow points contender, Timms moved in on Skaggs for sixth. As the checkers waved it was Colcord, Oklahoma's, Hughes in the West Siloam Pawn, Boom Drilling, DeLeon Automotive, Real Racing Wheels, J&J Air Drilling, Tara Apartments, Rainbow Graphics, Hooper Construction, Boomer Mud Pump & Supply, Hughes Chassis taking the first ever USMTS win at South Texas Speedway.

White Whistles to Limited Modified Win

Alright, how many are expecting another win by two-time IMCA Sourthen SportMod champion, Keith White? Not so fast!

Twenty-car took the green for the Limited Modified feature paced to green by Chuck Perry and Shane Hoefling. The two stayed side by side with Hoefling getting the point on lap 1 while the rest of the pack saw three wide action. Bobby Maupin got around Aaron Hudgeons for third just as Perry spun from second. The entire field somehow missed Perry and Perry kept rolling to keep the race runnng. Paul White, who snuck by Hudgeons in the melee then got past Maupin for second using the high side.

Hoefling had a good lead on lap 5 as the top five spaced themselves and K. White passed Bobby Fehring for sixth. Three laps later, P. White was closing rapidly on Hoefling, while Johnny Torres and Steve Whiteaker sr. ran wheel to wheel for eighth. P. White caught Hoefling coming to halfway and led on lap 10 with Maupin, Hudgeons and T J Huston rounding out the top five. Josh Majek and Art Cox spun on lap 10, while Perry and John Heinaman hooked bumpers bringing out the yellow.

Once back to green, P. White quickly got the jump, but Hoefling spun from second to bring caution back out on lap 13. On the restart, P. White and Maupin got away clean with Huston looking inside Hudgeons for third, with K. White right on his tail. Perry spun again on lap 14 collecting Majek and Russell Salinas. Finally back to racing again, Huston was along side Hudgeons for third and the Whiteaker, Torres battle for sixth resumed.

K. White saw his top five finish go away when he slowed and pulled off with five laps to go. As the two leaders checked out, Huston was still puting the heat on Hudgeons for third. As that duo continued their scrap, Whiteaker and Torres were still at it for sixth. Coming to the checkers, it was former USAC Sliver Crown champion, P. White grabbing the victory by a comfortable margin over Maupin.
