rebelracewriter
120 IMCA Modifieds from 5 states were whittled down to fastest 20 of the weekend for the 8th Annual Southern Challenge on Abilene Speedways 1/4 mile clay oval. Over the three days competitors raced their way through heats, last chance heats, last chance qualifiers, B & A qualifiers, then the big B-main to set the field. Keith White and Josh McGaha started on the front row of the 30 lap, $3000 to win IMCA Modified A-main. White got the lead on green ahead of Kenny Stone, Kelly Cross and Marcus Sanders, as McGaha fell back to fifth. National Champion, David Murray moved from 11th to 8th, while Henry Witt got stuck in high groove and fell from 10th to 14th. As the field completed lap 1 an infield tire got kicked on the track to bring out a yellow. White got a slight lead on green, with Stone, Cross and Sanders nose to tail a few cars back. On lap 3 the pack from 10th on back, brake-checked with Modified Rookie of the Year, PJ Egbert getting into Elias Anderson who spun. PJ Egbert was forced to pit with a flat right front tire. On the restart, White once again inched ahead, with Sanders looking inside on Cross on lap 4. White built an eight car lead over Stone, Cross and Sanders, who had five cars over McGaha, Greg Atwood, Wesley Veal and David Murray. Stone and Cross were able to put a little distance on Sanders as Cross pressured Stone for second. White was still checking out, while Cross was giving Stone some little beeps from the chrome horn as the race neared halfway. At the mid point the top ten were White, Stone, Cross, Sanders, McGaha, Atwood, Veal, Murray, Ken Couch, and Charlie Newton. Newton and Witt got by Couch on lap 16, with Clonch also making the pass by Couch on lap 17. Lap 18 saw the yellow hanky fly when Trevor Egbert did a 360% spin and keep going, but an infield tire got kicked on the track. White eased away on the restart, while Murray, Newton, Witt and Clonch all ran into each other as the pack checked up. With ten to go, White had a good lead over Stone, who was trying to hold off Cross for second. Cross got inside Stone on lap 21 and made the pass with Sanders following him through. Couch got into the back of Clonch on lap 22 and got black flagged, while Clonch was forced to pit with a flat tire. Cross put on a charge in search of White and began reeling in White for the lead, while National Championship contenders Murray and Witt were running right together. No battle ever ensued between the duo as the race wound down to a conclusion. Cross caught White with two laps to go, but was not able to mount a serious challenge as White in his Accent Plumbing/Unique Wallboard/Signs by Nate/Silver Wings Saloon/Tomastik Motorsports/Qwik Chassis took the win and the 3K check. 1 Keith White, Leander Tx 2 Kelly Cross, Amarillo Tx 3 Marcus Sanders, Happy Tx 4 Kenny Stone, Troy Tx 5 Josh McGaha, Brownwood Tx 6 Greg Atwood, Leander Tx 7 Wesley Veal, Princeton Tx 8 David Murray, Oberlin Kan 9 Henry Witt, Waco Tx 10 David Trauernicht, Beatrice Nebr 11 Charlie Newton, Brownwood Tx 12 Scotty Cook, Abilene tx 13 Lawrence Mikulencak, Corpus Christi Tx 14 PJ Egbert, Copperas Cove Tx 15 Trevor Egbert, Salado Tx 16 Ken Couch, Midland Tx 17 Tim Clonch, Quinlin Tx 18 Elias Anderson, Austin Tx 19 Trent Crawford Tx 20 Neal Flowers, Hobbs NM David Murray claimed Marcus Sanders
