Southern Challenge @ Abilene Spwy 10-19-03

Recommended Posts

A total of 86 IMCA Stocks and 40 IMCA Hobby Stocks from 6 states signed in over the three days in search of the 20 spots available for Sunday's Big A-mains. Through a slightly different qualifying procedures this year, similar to the modifieds, the field was trimmed down to best 20 cars in each class.

Tim Clonch and Jeff Turner lead the 20 car, 20lap IMCA Stock A-main to green. Clonch and Turner stayed side by side into turn 1, but Clonch came out first as Turner fell to fourth. Turner lost another spot to Jeff Anderson on lap 2, but regained the position on lap 3. Chad Estes stayed on Clonch's bumper followed by Chad Dalan.

The caution came out on lap 4 for a spin by Trey Jarrel to slow the pace. Clonch got a small lead on the restart, but Estes closed right back in quickly. Turner got by Dalan for third on lap 6 as the top four had a big gap back to Anderson, Mike Nichols, National Champion Duain Pritchett, Brandon Ellison and Doug Lorenz.

Lap 9 saw both Nichols and Pritchett get around Anderson for fifth and sixth. At halfway the top five were Clonch, Estes, Dalan, Turner and Nichols, with Estes still dogging Clonch for the lead. Estes took a look inside Clonch on lap 12 but fell back in line, unable to make the pass.

Turner was still trying to get by Dalan, who had a good gap back to Nichols and Pritchett. With five to go, Clonch and Estes had nearly 1/2 striaghtaway lead over Dalan and Turner, with Nichols and Pritchett closing quickly.

With two to go, Clonch got some breathing room on Estes, one whole car length. As the white flew, Dalan slid high and fell back from fourth to sixth, with no brakes. As the checkers flew it was Clonch in the Cottons Racing Engines/Brads Transmissions/Smileys car taking the hard cearned victory.

The 20 lap IMCA Hobby Stock A-main started with Tim Pyle and Chris Ater on the front row. Pyle grabbed the lead as the green flew and began to pull away. Bill Richars and Ater ran side by side for second, with Richards getting the position on lap 3. Jerry West closed in on Ater, as Joey Patterson and Chris Meyers were door to door for fifth.

By lap 5 Pyle was still edging ahead of Richards, with West making the pass on Ater for third. Patterson and Meyers were again wheel to whell on lap 7, with Meyers finally getting past. Just before halfway, Pyle got into the back of a lap car and faded rapidly, giving the top spot to Richards.

At halfway the top five were Richards, West, Ater, Meyers and Patterson, with Richards having 1/2 straightaway lead. Meyers ran down Ater and grabbed third on lap 15. Richards dodged lap traffic and gave up a little distance to West, who closed to within four car lengths.

The races only caution came on lap 17, when Mitch Calvert and Willie Kenley got tangled at the bottom of turns 1-2. The top three moved ahead on the restart, with Meyers getting around West for second with two to go. Richards would go on to put his Midwest Motorsports/Neilson Automotive/The Dorphinhaus car into the winners circle.
