Jerrod Wilson Snares $10k Triumph in Second Annual 600 Nationals

Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 15, 2007) – Jerrod Wilson shook off the bad luck that has plagued him over much of the 2007 season by scoring a $10,000 triumph in Saturday night's Second Annual 600 Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires at I-30 Speedway.

But after a dominant performance en route to winning Friday night's preliminary event over 125 competitors, Wilson had to work for the big bucks on Saturday night.

Running third during the early stages of the race, Wilson emerged from a torrid, three-way mid-race battle for the point with early pacesetter Stan Yockey and defending race champion Travis Senter, Jr., to take command for keeps on the 15th round.

While Wilson pocketed the $10,000 prize in the 600cc Multis, it was Trent Taylor earning a $1,500 victory to topping the 20-lap Horizon Mini Sprints Restricted "A" Class feature event.

Wilson's luck appeared to be inauspicious at best when he drew the six pill for the Sawyer Dash for Cash. But Wilson scratched his way up to second in the six-lapper to earn a front row outside starting berth for the feature event alongside Dash winner Yockey of Fresno, CA.

When the green flag flew on the feature, Yockey and Wilson battled for the lead with Yockey holding a slight edge as the opening round was completed only to have action interrupted moments later by a caution flag.

Back under way, fourth-starter Senter surged past Wilson for second and set his sights on Yockey. Yockey, Senter and Wilson slipped away from the field as the laps clicked off, with the lead trio reaching lapped traffic by the tenth round.

By the twelfth circuit, the trio began dicing for the point, swapping the lead several times along the way. Senter officially led the way across the stripe on the 14th round, but when the leaders battled in three-wide formation off of turn two on the 15th lap, it was Wilson emerged from the scramble with the lead off of turn four.

Still battling through heavy lapped traffic, Wilson found open track when the caution flew after 18 laps for Jonathan Henrick's turn four spin and then one final caution two laps later.

Wilson gradually slipped away from Senter over the final rounds and despite reaching the tail of the field on the final circuit, took the checkered flag with nearly a half straightaway advantage over Senter.

After setting the pace the opening 14 rounds, Yockey began to fade soon after the lap 18 caution and pulled pitside with six laps remaining.

Battling past Scott Sawyer in the final rounds, Tyson Hall of Longview, TX, took the show position behind Wilson and Senter. Oklahoma's Sawyer settled for fourth, with Illinois' Derek King rounding out the top five.

Texas' Travis Elliott advanced a half dozen positions to finish sixth, with Pennsylvania's Jake Murphy taking the checkered flag in seventh for the second time in as many nights. Pennsylvania's Michael Dicely was eighth, with Illinois' Daniel Robinson advancing from Last Chance race action to snare ninth in the feature. Tulsa's Riley Adair picked up a $500 bonus from Clean Racing by earning Hard Charger honors with a drive from 18th to complete the top ten.

Sprint Car legend Sammy Swindell crossed the stripe eleventh after starting 14th in the 26-car feature event.

In the Horizon Mini Sprints feature, Taylor was chased to line by Friday night winner Darien Roberts, Devon Huff, Karley Dobson and Brian Ritter.

A total of 129 drivers from 19 different states as well as Australia competed in the Multis portion of the Second Annual 600 Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires at I-30 Speedway, with another 26 competing in the Horizon Mini Sprints Restricted "A" Class.
