ASCS Sooner Region Set for Texas Double

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 10, 2007) – With three drivers locked into a heated championship points battle, the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region ventures south of the Red River for a pair of events in Texas this weekend.

On Friday night, the ASCS Sooner Region makes its first stand-alone appearance at Waco's Heart O' Texas Speedway. Then on Saturday night, the ASCS Sooner Region takes to the fast high-banks of Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, TX, for the final time this season.

It could prove to be a critical weekend of action for the ASCS Sooner Region, as a mere seven points separate the top three title contenders with just five nights of competition remaining including this weekend's Texas pair.

Leading the way into this weekend's double is Fort Worth's Kevin Ramey, who resides just a few miles from Cowtown Speedway. Gunning for his third ASCS Sooner Region title, Ramey moved atop the point charts with his third series win of the season this past Saturday night at Lawton Speedway.

But two Tulsa-area drivers are within seven points of Ramey, with Sapulpa's Cody Branchcomb just three points off the lead pace and Tulsa's Brian McClelland another four points back in third. Denied victory lane thus far, Branchcomb's consistent strong finishes have kept him in contention. McClelland captured his first career ASCS Sooner Region win in the series most recent stop at Cowtown Speedway on July 7.

Over 100 points off the lead pace in fourth is Gavin Punch of Collinsville, OK, with Lawton's Michael Brown rounding out the current top five as he tries for his best career ASCS Sooner Region ranking.

The balance of the current top ten entering this weekend's action includes 2001 series champion J.P. Bailey (Fort Worth, TX), Derek Cottrell (Fletcher, OK), Ray Allen Kulhanek (Conroe, TX), Sherman Davis (Sand Springs, OK) and Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK).

Friday's action at Heart O' Texas Speedway goes green at 8:00 p.m., with Friday's card at Cowtown Speeday firing off at 7:00 p.m.

The semi-banked, 1/3-mile Heart O' Texas Speedway clay oval is located in Waco, TX, off I-35 Exit 343, then 0.6 miles north on east frontage road. For more information, contact the track at 254-829-2294.

The high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway dirt oval is located just east of Fort Worth, TX, off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Highway, then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road. For more information, contact the track at 817-478-9952 or 817-572-0848.

Following eight early-season rainouts, the 2007 schedule for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region is now composed of 14 events at seven different tracks throughout Oklahoma and Texas.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
