By “Slider” Young

IMCA Modifieds make rare show at Cowtown.

Kennedale, Texas. With heavy rains around the North Texas area, Kennedale Speedway Park was forced to cancel its big year end show, the ‘Tournament of Speed’. Neighboring track, Cowtown Speedway and promoter Bo Rawdon stepped in to give the IMCA racers a place to run, scheduling a Saturday/Sunday show. Mother Nature forced cancellation of the Saturday night portion of the show, but crews worked the track into condition for the Sunday finale.

Scotty Brown and Nicholas Littlejohn lead the 21 car field to green. Coming off turn 4 to complete lap 1, Jared Webb joined the front row to make it 3 wide for the lead as they crossed the line. The 1st caution came on lap 2 when Brandon Houk spun and stalled in turn 1. On the restart Webb jumped out to the lead. N. Littlejohn challenged Webb on the inside coming off turn 2, the two ran side by side but Webb held the position.

With Webb out front, Glen Leuschner and Brown moved in to make it a 3 wide battle for 2nd on lap 4. With Brown grabbing 2nd, Sean Jones joined Leuschner and N. Littlejohn to make a 3 wide battle for 3rd on lap 5. Leuschner, N. Littlejohn, and Jones battled 3 wide for several laps with Jones taking over the 3rd spot on lap 9. Leuschner settled in 4th and Cameron West and Billy Melton joined N. Littlejohn in a 3 wide battle for 5th on lap 11. Jones challenged Brown for 2nd on lap 13 and completed the pass on lap 14. Lap 14 also saw Ronny Sigman and Varian Sisson battling side by side for 9th.

At halfway the running order was Webb, Jones, Brown, Leuschner, Melton, N. Littlejohn, West, Jimmy Littlejohn, Sisson, Sigman, Campbell, and Large. The 2nd caution came on lap 18 when Sisson got into the back of J. Littlejohn spinning both in turn 2. Sisson was sent to the pits.

On the restart the running order was Webb, Jones, Brown, Leuschner, Melton, and N. Littlejohn. With Webb out front and Jones in 2nd, Brown and Leuschner battled side by side for 3rd through lap 19 with Brown taking the position. The 3rd and final caution came on lap 20 when Greg Frazier and Missy McAllister-Kerr made contact on the front stretch sending Kerr into the wall ending her night.

On the restart it was Webb followed by Jones, Brown, Leuschner, Melton, N. Littlejohn, Sigman, J. Littlejohn, Large, and Campbell. Brown broke on the restart and limped to the pits. Webb continued to hold the lead with Jones in 2nd. Leuschner took over 3rd while Melton and N. Littlejohn battled side by side for 4th. On lap 23 Jones began to pressure Webb for the lead, taking looks on the outside.

With 5 to go it was Webb, Jones, Leuschner, N. Littlejohn, Melton, J. Littlejohn, Sigman, and Large. Webb and Jones really put on a show for the final 5 laps. Jones would try high and then switch low, Webb held it in the middle and made his car as wide as possible. On lap 27 Jones was able to get inside Webb, but Webb held him off. On lap 28 Jones tried high again but Webb again held off Jones and went on to take the win.

Webb started in 3rd and lead 29 of the 30 laps on his way to victory lane! Webb, in his post race interview said that Jones came to NTMS a few weeks ago and beat him on his home track, so he thought he would return the favor by coming to Cowtown to beat Jones on his home track.

Webb was happy with the win, but said he would have been happy with 2nd, it was all about good close racing! Webb in a Dirtworks, is sponsored by Tonys D&D Auto Parts, David Hunt Paint & Body, Twister Excavation, and S&S Fabrication. Webb also gave a special thanks to his wife Crystal. Jones in his TrackMaster came from 8th to finish a strong 2nd. Leuschner in his TayBut started 5th and crossed the line 3rd. N. Littlejohn in his "Morphodite" started 2nd and fought hard to finish 4th. Melton came from 9th to round out the top 5!
