Burgtorf wins Quincy Deery, Grady stretches series points lead

QUINCY, Ill. (Sept. 2) – Mark Burgtorf led a strong showing by home track drivers in winning Sunday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Quincy Raceway, while Jeremy Grady gave himself a little more breathing room in the race for the IMCA Sunoco Late Model tour title.

Burgtorf led all 50 laps in scoring the $2,000 victory, his Deery career 18th. Jason Frankel was the runner-up in his first series feature appearance in more than a decade, while fellow locals Kevin Tomlinson and Justin Reed rounded out the top four.

Grady ran fifth, six spots ahead of Darrel DeFrance, and will take a nine point advantage into Monday’s opening night show at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals at Boone Speedway.

Quickly ahead from his outside row one start, Burgtorf caught up with the back of the pack by the seventh cir cuit and worked his way through lapped traffic with Terry Neal in pursuit.

Burgtorf built his advantage to a straightaway by lap 25; Frankel passed Neal for second before the only cau tion of the event came on lap 45.

Tomlinson went low while Reed took the outside line around Neal following the ensuing re-start but Burgtorf again pulled away and was not challenged at the checkers.

Eight of the top 10 finishers were regulars at Quincy during the regular IMCA Late Model point season. Jerry Weisenberger won his “B” feature and advanced a dozen spots to finish sixth.

DeFrance came up one place short of qualifying through his heat race and won the other “B.”

Monday’s Deery feature winner will become the first champion crowned at the 25th anniversary Super Nation als. The 21st annual series concludes Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15 with the 100-lap, $10,000 to win Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.
