ASCS Sooner Region Set for OKC & Lawton This Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 14, 2007) – After more than a month off, the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region fires back to life with a pair of events in Oklahoma this weekend.

On Friday night, the series makes its first appearance of the season at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway. Then on Saturday night, it's a quick trip down the H.E. Bailey Turnpike for the series first stop at Lawton Speedway.

The series first OKC-Lawton double on June 15 and 16 was washed out.

With five events in the books and seven rainouts over the early portion of the year, 21-year-old Cody Branchcomb of Sapulpa, OK, holds a slim lead as he chases down his first series championship.

Just 12 points off the lead pace is Tulsa's Brian McClelland, who likewise is pursuing his first Sooner crown after notching his first ASCS Sooner Region victory in the series most recent event on July 7 at Cowtown Speedway.

Entering the weekend ranked fourth is two-time series champion Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth, TX, who will look to make up some ground on the leaders. Thirty-seven points off the lead pace, Ramey will likely gain at least one spot as third-ranked Ray Allen Kulhanek is expected to be in ASCS Gulf South competition this weekend.

Sherman Davis of Sand Springs, OK, rounds out the current top five, with the balance of the current top ten including Gavin Punch (Collinsville, OK), 2001 ASCS Sooner Region champion J.P. Bailey (Fort Worth, TX), Michael Brown (Lawton, OK), 2005 ASCS Sooner Region champion Sean McClelland (Collinsville, OK) and Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK).

Friday's action at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway fires off at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's event at Lawton Speedway going green at 8:30 p.m.

Oklahoma City's semi-banked, 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval is located on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds near the intersection of N.W. 10th and May Avenue. For more information, contact the track at 405-948-6796.

Lawton Speedway is located in Lawton, OK, off I-44 Exit 36, then 2.5 miles west on Lee Boulevard, then 1.4 miles south on Sheridan Road. For more information, contact the track at 580-355-6417.

Following the early-season rainouts, the 2007 schedule for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region is now composed of 14 events at seven different tracks throughout Oklahoma and Texas.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
