Texas Dodge Dealers 7th Annual Oktober”Fast” @ San Antonio Speedway 10-4-03

By J M Hallas

San Antonio, Texas. Fast qualifier, James Lee started sixth with the invert in the nine car Allison Legacy Series portion of Oktober”Fast”. This put Michael Rhodes and Bill Boecker on the front row. Boecker got the early lead but it wasn’t long until Lee blew past on lap 3 tp snag the point. On lap 4 Boecker brought out the yellow after he did a half-spin and hit the inside wall while battling with Frank Johnson for second.

Lee got away on the restart leaving Johnson to battle with points leader Mel Krauss, in a borrowed car. At the mid point the top five were Lee, Johnson, Krauss, Michael Villareal and Mcl. Rhodes. Lee had an eight car gap back to the nose to tail fight for second between Johnson and Krauss.

On lap 15 Krauss got inside Johnson as the two ran side by side with Krauss getting the spot and going in search of Lee. Krauss got the break he needed to close up on the leader when Tom Harwell spin on lap 20. Krauss got the nose inside on the restart in turns 3-4, but got loose in turns 1-2 and fell back in line. Krauss tried the move again with three to go, but came up short once again. On the final lap Krauss got along side Lee down the back stretch, the duo stayed side by side through turns 3-4. They made slight contact coming out of turn 4, but both hung on with Lee taking the hard fought win in his Just Joe Racing/Thunderbird.
