Wright On Again in ASCS Speedweek Round Four at State Fair Speedway

Lonnie Wheatley, OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (July 20, 2007) – While the summer temperatures continue to get hotter, they mid-summer heat can't keep pace with the hot streak that three-time and reigning O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National champion Gary Wright is currently riding on.

Wright raced to victory lane for the third time in four rounds of 15th Annual ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek competition by topping Friday night's 25-lap feature at State Fair Speedway, moving one step closer to an unprecedented sixth ASCS Speedweek crown.

The victory marked Wright's eleventh of the season and his fifth in the last seven events as he stretched his current series points lead to 23 markers over Jason Johnson, who took runner-up honors from Wayne Johnson on the final lap of Friday night's main event.

"The competition out here with the ASCS National Tour is so tough every night out, it really feels good when you can get rolling like this," Wright commented of his 117th career win with the series and his 26th career ASCS Speedweek triumph. Wright went on to say, "Not too bad for an old man."

Wright worked his way into the Pole Dash by racing from seventh to win the sixth and final heat of the evening. Wright then charged past Wayne Johnson on the third lap of the Dash to earn the pole position for the feature aboard the Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction/Southwest Express/Whiteco Commercial Funding No. 9 Maxim.

Wright gunned into the early lead as the green flag flew, with third-starter Tim Crawley taking second from Wayne Johnson on the opening lap.

Wright slipped away to a half straightaway advantage over the opening handful of laps before getting bogged down in lapped traffic. Crawley and Wayne Johnson closed to Wright's tail tank by the eighth lap, setting up a three-car duel for the lead.

Crawley pulled alongside Wright on the high side of turns one and two on the ninth round, but Wright quickly closed the door and raced around a lapped car to preserve the lead.

Wayne Johnson edged ahead of Crawley for second upon the completion of the ninth lap, with the caution flying the next time around when Darren Stewart spun in turn two. Stewart's spin proved to be a saving grace for Jason Johnson, who at the same time clipped an infield tire in turn four and watched a number of rivals race by before he got back up to speed. With the caution flying however, Jason Johnson rejoined the chase in fourth.

Back under way, Wright was simply unstoppable. Wright weathered one caution after 14 laps when Bud Kaeding spun just as the leaders had reached lapped traffic.

Jason Johnson battled past Crawley for third on the 19th circuit, as Wright held a half straightaway advantage over Wayne Johnson a lap later when he reached traffic once again.

Wright worked traffic flawlessly and took the checkered flag with three lapped cars between himself and his pursuers.

Jason Johnson caught Wayne Johnson on the 28th round and the pair traded the spot a couple of times before Jason Johnson got the edge exiting the final corner, taking runner-up honors in Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports No. 41 Eagle.

Wayne Johnson settled for show honors in Mike and Tim Hammers' Wesmar-powered H&H Enterprises No. 94 Eagle, while Crawley claimed fourth in Mike Ward's CnB Mushrooms No. 88 Maxim.

Kevin Ramey rounded out the top five aboard Tom Willis' Wells-powered Commercial Music No. 7m Eagle.

Foster Landon solidified leading Brodix Rookie of the Year status by crossing the stripe sixth, while Mike Goodman charged from 18th to snare seventh. Nick Smith took the checkered flag in eighth, with 16th-starter Kenneth Walker and Johnny Miller completing the top ten.

Jason Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Travis Rilat, Nick Smith, Danny Jennings and Wright topped heat race action for the 45-car field. Subbing for an injured Adam Main, fellow Californian Bud Kaeding topped the First "B" Main in his ASCS debut, with Goodman winning the Second "B" Main.

Aaron Berryhill flipped on the opening lap of the night's fifth heat race. Berryhill was uninjured but done for the night.

The 15th Annual ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek concludes with the fifth and final round of action at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, OK, on Saturday night.
