ASCS / Wesmar Challenge Leader Board

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (July 12, 2007) – The O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National championship battle is about as tight as it can get with only three points separating the top three drivers.

The battle for positions to the ASCS / Wesmar Challenge, which will take place during the Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX, on October 13, is just as torrid. And not only with the National Tour, but with each of the Regions as well.

While trailing Gary Wright and Wayne Johnson by three points in the $50,000 championship battle, Jason Johnson holds a slim lead in the race for a position in the event that will offer up a Wesmar Racing Engine. Johnson is three points ahead of Wright in Challenge points, with Wayne Johnson another six points back in third.

A number of the Regional races are just as tight. Currently, the closest Regional battle is in the ASCS Rocky Mountain Region, with C.J. Johnson, Patrick Bourke and Keith Rauch all knotted with four points apiece.

Thus far in 2007, 38 different drivers have recorded at least one feature win in 79 winged ASCS features throughout the country.

A total of 581 different drivers have competed in at least one of the 79 winged ASCS events through July 7, with the wingless Canyon Region drivers bumping the total to 632.

The top two drivers in ASCS / Wesmar Challenge points for the National Tour and each of the eleven winged Regions at the September 15 cutoff date will earn invitations to the October 13 ASCS / Wesmar Challenge at the Devil's Bowl Speedway Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX.

The ASCS / Wesmar Challenge will be run in two 15-lap segments, with an inversion following the first segment. Passing and finishing points will be in effect for both segments, with the top points earner coming away with a new Wesmar Racing Engine.

Drivers earn points towards the Wesmar Racing Engines Challenge by earning three points for a feature win, two points for a runner-up finish and one point for each third-place feature finish. A driver must compete in at least 60% of a respective Region's events and be a registered member of the American Sprint Car Series to represent that Region in the ASCS / Wesmar Racing Engines Challenge.
