Smiths celebrate feature wins, overall titles

at IMCA American Stock Car special

 

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (July 3) – Two more members of the Smith family were in the IMCA American Stock Car Shoot-Out spotlight Tuesday at Marshalltown Speedway.

 

Dustin Smith won the $2,000 Stock Car main event, taking the checkers ahead of Wisconsin visitor Rod Snellenberger. Donovan Smith ran third, edging opening night winner Jason Cook by one point and Snellen berger by two points for the overall Shoot-Out title and an automatic qualifying spot in the Sunoco Race Fuels Race of Champions during the upcoming IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.

 

Another Smith brother, Devin, was third in the Hobby Stock finale to take the overall crown for that class by one point over Tuesday winner Nick Murty.

 

Dustin Smith started Tuesday’s 40-lap Stock Car main on the pole, caught Cook for the lead on lap two and was well on his way to checking out on the field before a caution at midway.

 

The yellow light came on again on lap 25 and both Snellenberger and Donavon passed him on the ensuing re-start, but Dustin was second by the time the 26th lap was scored and back in first, half a car length ahead of Snellenberger, at the end of the next circuit.

 

Back-to-back cautions put the field together again on lap 38. Dustin would stay in front to the finish, chased across the stripe by Snellenberger, Donavon, Rick Gustin and Luke Veren.

 

“The re-starts were real crucial,” Dustin said afterwards. “I was worried about Rod going outside and Donavon went inside. They got me once and I had to get on the high horse to get back around them.”

 

Both Dustin and Donavon are in their rookie campaigns in the class; each owns a Hobby Stock win at the Shoot-Out the last two years.

 

“This win was bigger. It’s different now, racing with guys like Brian Blessington, the Gustins and Jason Schoenberger,” Dustin said. “It’s a real privilege to be able to do that.”

 

Blessington ended his night in sixth. Cook followed his opening night victory with a seventh place showing. Defending race winner Damon Murty was involved in an early three-car mishap and ended in 20th.

 

The fastest car from the onset, Murty led flag to flag in the 30-lap Hobby main, taking the $750 checkers ahead of Dustin Elliott, Devin Smith, Shannon Anderson and Bryan Snell.

 

Five cautions slowed the first 12 laps, but once the field found its rhythm the race ran to the finish. Devin, the Monday night winner, was second most of the way before a bobble on the white flag lap gave Elliott an opening. “B” qualifier Luke Wanninger had worked his way up to fourth before slipping in turn four with five laps to go.

 

Jason Mallicoat repeated his winning ways in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, pocketing $400 in another convincing win, this one coming from a fourth row start. Austin Kaplan, Danny Dvorak, Fred Schimmels and James May rounded out the top five.

 

Seventy-five drivers from eight states competed in the Stock Car portion of the 12th annual Shoot-Out, along with 42 Hobby Stock drivers and 23 Northern SportMod drivers.
