Jason Johnson Adds Huron Heroics to ASCoT Win Ledger

Lonnie Wheatley, HURON, S.D. (June 23, 2007) – Jason Johnson put the finishing touches on the inaugural ASCS Northern Plains Speedweek by posting his third victory in the four-race set in Saturday night's 25-lap O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National feature at Dakota State Fair Speedway.

Johnson cruised out front much of the way, holding a commanding lead at times aboard Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports/Custom Equipment Design No. 41 Eagle.

But a late caution that set up a three-lap charge to the checkered flag gave Wayne Johnson just the chance he was looking for. Wayne Johnson slid in front of Jason Johnson in turns one and two on the lap 23 restart, but Jason Johnson countered by charging back underneath off the corner.

Jason Johnson scampered away to nearly a half straightaway lead over the final two laps to record his sixth ASCS National Tour win of the year and 25th of his career. And at the same time, "The Ragin' Cajun" strengthened his position in the $50,000 championship points chase, closing to within 31 points of current leader Gary Wright, who escaped the Northern Plains with a scant six-point lead over Wayne Johnson.

After a commanding heat race victory, Jason Johnson earned the pole position for the feature with his seventh Pole Dash win in the series most recent eleven events. The Eunice, LA, native took full advantage by gunning into the lead at the outset and immediately distancing himself from fellow front row starter Gregg Bakker and third-starter Travis Rilat.

Johnson held a half straightaway lead when the caution flew after four laps for Chuck Swenson, who came to a stop with driveline woes after racing from 16th to tenth in the opening circuits.

Back under green, Johnson checked out once again on the high side, leaving the rest of the field to battle for position. On the move was Wayne Johnson, who had cracked the top five by the fourth lap after starting eleventh.

Wayne Johnson made quick work of Chad Meyer on the lap five restart, then battled past Rilat for third by the eighth lap. Wayne Johnson went to work on Gregg Bakker for second, but the Sioux Falls shoe held strong to maintain the runner-up slot.

Meanwhile, Jason Johnson had stretched out a full straightaway lead. After racing through lapped traffic for several rounds, Johnson's lead was erased after 15 circuits when Foster Landon spun to a stop in turn three with a cut right rear tire.

Soon after the restart, Wayne Johnson assumed the second position when Bakker's mount inexplicably lost power. And after working his way forward from the sixth row, Wayne Johnson found himself on Jason Johnson's rear bumper when the caution flew after 22 laps for Dave Glennon's disabled mount.

Wayne Johnson made a valiant bid for a second consecutive win in Mike Hammers' Wesmar-powered H&H Enterprises No. 94 Eagle, but Jason Johnson was up to the task by successfully repelling the challenge and charging to the checkered flag.

"The bottom was really good for a while, I was gaining some on him," Wayne Johnson explained. "But I guess a lot of other guys were running the bottom too because it was about worn out at the end, I tried the slide but just couldn't make it stick."

Rilat took the show position in the Motor Mike-powered F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X, while Gary Wright held on to the series point lead by racing from 13th to finish fourth in the Wesmar-powered Whiteco Commercial Funding No. 9 Maxim.

Taking the seat of the Johnson-owned AHT Inc. No. 27 Maxim for the night, Jake Peters raced from 12th to round out the top five, with the balance of the top ten including Chad Meyer, California's Adam Main, 20th-starter Lee Grosz, Scott Butz and 19th-starter Micah Schliemann.

Meyer, Jason Johnson and Scott Butz topped heat race action.
