rebelracewriter
7th Annual Texas Stock Car Spectacular @ Thunder Hill Raceway 9-27-03 TAMS points chase tightens up. Kyle, Texas. With a record number of Texas Asphalt Modifieds on hand (30), the series was able to run its first B-main to set the field. Series points leader, Jerry Schild, was relegated to that race after a poor run in qualifying. James Cole took top honors setting the quickest time with a 15. 342 on the 3/8 mile D-shaped raceway. In the B-main, Roger Williams and Don Banker led the field to green, with R. Williams getting the lead. As the top three began to edge away, David Schury and John Henry Witzche rubbed for the final transfer spot. J. Schild got the lead on lap 7 with R. Williams, Banker, Schury and Witzsche rounding out the top five at halfway. Once out front J. Schild put some distance on the battle for second as Schury closed in on Banker. J. Schild took the win over R. Williams, Banker, Schury, Witzsche, Jim Myers, Johnny Smith, Lupe Gomez and Ed Gilfus, with the top four transfering to the main. With the six car invert, Chris Swenson and Jason Ray paced the 24 car field to a start. On the first attempt, Barry Codling slid into the infield in turn 2. On the next try, Swenson jumped into the lead with Cole moving into fourth from his sixth place starting spot. Cole then blasted by the top three on the tricky high groove to get the lead on lap 2. By lap 5 Cole had started to gap the field, while good battle raged between Ray Doyon, Chris Davidson and Lawrence Mikulencak for 8th-10th. Cole had built a full straightaway lead as the caution flew on lap 12 for debris(the air cleaner from R. Williams). Once back to green, Cole again eased away from the battle for second between Swenson and Ray, who had a small gap back to Newton Barta, HE Naumann and John Hienaman. Caution flew again on lap 20 when Jeff Smith spun off turn 3. On the restart, Mikulencak spun after contact with C. Davidson, who then pitted from 8th. Cole, Swenson and Ray then put two car lengths on the fourth place battle with Jn. Hienaman pressuring Barta for the spot. At the crossed flags it was Cole, again pulling away, Swenson, Ray, Barta and Jn. Hienaman in the top five. Cole continued to move ahead, with Ray putting the heat on Swenson when caution flew for another spin by Jf. Smith on lap 33. Shortly after the restart, Naumann spun for yellow on lap 37, Barta pitted from fourth. On the next restart, Mike Williams spun and slammed the turn 4 wall hard, but was able to drive back to the pits. With 10 to go, Mikulencak was trying the high side on Joey Hienaman in a scrap for fourth place. On lap 43 Swenson’s run came to an end when the transmision broke causing a stack up, with Banker doing a ½ spin. With 5 laps to go, Cole had a six car lead over Ray, who had a comfortable 10 car gap back the Hienamans in third and fourth. As the checkers fell it was Cole taking the win in his Carquest/Diversified Trucks/Precision Collision/Color Trim/Southwest Public Safety/Mission Auto Parts/Swenson Chassis. With Ray’s second and J. Schild’s 10 place finishes, Ray was able to cut into J. Schild’s 82 point lead.
