BONE BAGS BOLIVAR, BECOMES 11TH O’REILLY USMTS WINNER IN 11 RACES

BOLIVAR, Mo. (June 15) — Kelly Shryock went up in smoke with five laps to go, and Johnny Bone Jr. went to victory lane as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series kicked off the three-day, three-track 4th Annual Missouri Nationals at Bolivar Speedway USA on Friday night. The win, worth $2,000 to the second-generation driver from Pea Ridge, Ark., was his first since September 11, 2005, at the Monett Speedway during Round 3 of 2nd Annual Missouri Nationals.

Bone's triumph also made 11 straight races with a new face in the winners circle.

Jesse Stovall of Galena, Mo., drew the pole position and led the first two laps before engine troubles sidelined him and turned over the lead to Thursday night's winner, Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo. Payne's reign was short-lived, however, as Shryock slipped ahead to lead lap 4.

With his eye on an eighth National Event victory this season, Shryock continued his march with Bone keeping the eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS in sight. with six laps to go, Shryock's mount let out a puff of smoke as he exited turn 2 and he began to get slower. Bone got around Shryock on the next lap before Shryock's engine expired one lap later, relegating the Fertile, Iowa, veteran to a 17th-place finish and his first DNF of the 2007 season.

Zack VanderBeek earned the AFCO Pole Award for earning the most Home Pride Passing Points in the second Heat Race, but drew the seventh starting spot for the 30-lap Holley "A" Main. The 2004 Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year clawed his way to a runner-up paycheck by the end of the contest, while Payne hung on for third. Greg Skaggs finished fourth and Al Hejna rounded out the top-5 at the checkered flag.

Sixth through 10th went to Mike Roach, Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr., Eddie Martin and Rusty Dukes, respectively. Weder started 20th and earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

Up next, the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors invade Lebanon I-44 Speedway on Saturday night for Round 2 of the 4th Annual Missouri Nationals and the fourth of five straight $2,000-to-win shows in the Show-Me State. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., with hot laps at 7:00 and racing at 7:30. The Lebanon I-44 Speedway is a 4/10-mile high-banked oval located 6 miles northeast of Lebanon on I-44 to exit 135 (sleeper), then north to Outer Dr., then 1.1 miles west on Historic US 66. For more information call the track hotline at (417) 532-2060.

Round 3 of the 4th Annual Missouri Nationals will take place at the Monett Speedway on Sunday.
