ASCS Sooner Region Set for OKC-Lawton Double

by Lonnie Wheatley

Tulsa, OK. (June 11, 2007) - After a thrilling feature event this past weekend, it's right back to business for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region with a pair of events in Oklahoma this weekend.

On Friday night, the Sooner Region stars take to Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway for the first time this season. Then on Saturday night, the teams will beat a path down the H.E. Bailey Turnpike to battle it out at Lawton Speedway.

Over the past weekend, two-time series champion Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth, TX, and Tulsa's Brian McClelland both strengthened status as 2007 championship contenders with a hair-raising battle for victory honors at Mid-America Speedway.

Ramey ultimately came away with the victory, denying the younger McClelland brother his first series win. And with his second win of the season, Ramey climbed into fourth in points while McClelland moved into a tie for second with Texas racer Ray Allen Kulhanek.

But still out front is Cody Branchcomb of Sapulpa, OK, who retained his series point lead by racing from deep in the field on Saturday night to finish fourth. Branchcomb enters this weekend's pivotal double with a 38-point cushion over McClelland and Kulhanek, with Ramey 59 points out of the lead.

Chasing the Sooner Region crown for the first time, Sherman Davis of Sand Springs, OK, enters the weekend ranked fifth, with the balance of the top five including Gavin Punch (Collinsville, OK), 2005 series champion Sean McClelland (Collinsville, OK), 2006 National Tour Rookie of the Year Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK), Michael Brown (Lawton, OK) and Kenneth Walker (Sapulpa, OK).

Last year, Sean McClelland swept the Sooner Region's first OKC-Lawton weekend double, which included the much ballyhooed controversy that included Ramey at Lawton Speedway

Ramey and Sean McClelland have combined to win all five Sooner Region events at Lawton Speedway over the past two seasons, with McClelland scoring three wins and Ramey notching a pair. McClelland and Nick Smith split Sooner wins at State Fair Speedway last season.

Friday's action at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway fires off at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's event at Lawton Speedway going green at 8:30 p.m.

Oklahoma City's semi-banked, 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval is located on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds near the intersection of N.W. 10th and May Avenue. For more information, contact the track at 405-948-6796.

The 2007 schedule for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region consists of 18 events at eight different tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series.
