ASCS Gulf South Tackles Two More Texas Tracks this Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 21, 2007) – After a pair of first-time winners broke into victory lane this past weekend, the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region takes on another pair of South Texas tracks this weekend.

On Saturday night, the series invades the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX, then on Sunday the ASCS Gulf South Region moves on to South Texas Speedway in Corpus Christi for the $2,000 to win Memorial Day Classic.

After Jason Johnson won the series season opener on April 6, it was Brandon Berryman and Johnny Miller cracking victory lane for the first time during this past weekend's action at Motorama and Houston Raceway Park.

Miller's victory, combined with fourth and third place runs, has moved the Burleson, TX, racer atop the early season ASCS Gulf South Region point charts by a dozen markers over Missouri City, Texas' Berryman.

Just another ten points back is Skip Wilson of Mesquite, TX, who is also looking for his first series win. Past series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Danbury, TX, is just two more points back in fourth, with three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat of Texas City another four points back in fifth as only 28 points separate the top five.

The balance of the top ten includes defending series champion Gary Watson (Beaumont, TX), Chris Sweeney (Channelview, TX), Kent Lewis, Jr. (Willis, TX), Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX) and Jimmy Brooks (College Station, TX).

Among other expected for the weekend are Tommy Bryant, 16-year-old Channin Tankersley, Richard Holt, Lane Whittington, Larry Hartwell and 16-year-old Kathryne Minter of Bedford, TX.

Saturday's card at Gator Motorplex goes green at 7:00 p.m., with Sunday's action at South Texas Speedway firing off at 7:30 p.m.

The high-banked, ¼-mile Gator Motorplex red clay oval is located in Willis, TX, off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd Hill), then east, then 1.4 miles south on SR 75. For more information, contact the track at 936-588-6127.

The semi-banked, ¼-mile South Texas Speedway dirt oval is located in Corpus Christi, TX, two miles southwest of SR 358 on Old Brownsville Road. For more information, contact the track at 361-808-7223.

The 2007 slate for the ASCS Gulf South Region consists of 22 events at ten different tracks throughout Louisiana and Texas as well a single event in Mississippi.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With 13 different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
