INTERNATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 2004 HOOTERS DRAG RACING SERIES SCHEDULE

NORWALK, Ohio (September 19, 2003) – The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has released the 2004 Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series schedule, featuring twelve national events and a consolidated schedule running from late March through October.

"The 2004 Hooters schedule is more user friendly than in the past years," stated IHRA President Bill Bader. "There are no back-to-back events nor will we experience the two-month window (April through May) without an event. This will enable us to maintain a consistent television presence on SPEED Channel and in the media.

"This schedule will better accommodate fans, racers and sponsors," added Bader.

Bader announced the 2004 season opens with the 2nd Annual Amalie Oil Texas Nationals at San Antonio Raceway, March 26-28, 2004, and concludes at the Hooters World Finals at Rockingham Dragway, October 22-24.

"We will continue to emphasize growth of our established and newer national events in the United States and Canada," stated Bader. "This year, IHRA presented three successful inaugural events in San Antonio, Edmonton and Detroit. We will concentrate on building their profile and attendance.

"Recognizing many of today’s fans want to spend Sunday in Church with their families, IHRA will conclude two national events Saturday evening, instead of the traditional Sunday," added Bader.

"The Martin and Norwalk races will conclude Saturday evening, with the championship finals featured in the Saturday ‘Night of Fire’," added Bader. "IHRA is always looking at strategies to increase weekend attendance. With the trend in motor sports going away from Sunday events and people going out Friday and Saturday, we are committed to discovering new solutions to accommodate our race fans.

Bader added, "Because of the large car count and popularity of the race, the Norwalk event will be a four day event, Wednesday, August 25 through Saturday the 28th. Martin will be contested Thursday, August 12 through Saturday, August 14."

The Inaugural Motor City Nationals, at Milan Dragway, met with huge success this past summer. Anticipating continued growth in 2004, plans are already underway to widen the 600-foot long concrete launch pads to 16 feet, profile and smooth the track surface, and extend the cement guardwall to the end of racetrack".
