McGuire motors to Mod Main win

The 20 lap, 18-car IMCA Modified main saw Anthony Otken get into turn 1 first, but it was Glen Derks II taking the point out of turn 2. Jimmy Tidwell got along side Otken on lap 1 taking second , then looking inside Derks for lead. Tidwell lost ground on lap 2 as Otken, Allen Waltermire and Pat McGuire got by. Mcguire got past both Otken and Waltermire on lap 3 and was quickly on Derks for the lead. Just as McGuire was side by side with Derks for the lead, yellow waved when Jason Hubert and Wayne Walker got together in the pack.

On the restart, McGuire ducked low in turn 1 and came out of turn 2 with the lead, while Keith White grabbed third from Waltermire. White snagged second from Derks on lap 5 with Jason Hoffman, Waltermire and Derks three wide on lap 6 for fourth. White was running down McGuire and got a the break he needed as yellow waved for continued contact between Wesley Hamilton and Danny Gribble that ended with both going off turn 1 and both getting black flagged.

The two co-points leaders, McGuire and White got away on green as defending track and Regional Champion, PJ Egbert took fourth from Waltermire. At the crossed flags it was McGuire, White, Tidwell, Egbert and Waltermire in the top five. White then began trying the high side of McGuire for lead but was not able to get the spot. Egbert got by Tidwell for third putting the top three in points , 1-2-3 in the race.

White and Egbert then engaged in yet another of their epic battles for position until lap 14 when White slid high in turn 2 and lost ground. Egbert was closing on McGuire but did a half spin on lap 17 losing three spots. This left McGuire with a big lead over White, Waltermire, Hoffman, Egbert and Tidwell who were fighting for the runner-up spot. McGuire, who came from the eleventh starting spot, took the fairly win in the McGuire Truck & Auto, K&S Backhoe, Victory Chassis. Waltermire nipped White at the line for second.

Kiphen cashes in SportMod main

In the 17-car, 15 lap IMCA Southern SportMod main, it was Tim Carmen jr getting the jump from the pole in to turn1. Outside polesitter, Kenny Ware wasted little time getting by Carmen in turn 3 to lead the first circuit, while TJ Green, Mike Autry and Carmen went three wide for second. K. Ware and TJ Green then broke free of the pack, now going three and four wide for position. On lap 3 it was two-time IMCA SSM champion, Keith White, Shad Stevens and Sid Kiphen going three abreast for third.

K. Ware slipped up giving TJ Green the lead on lap 4 with Kiphen moving into second. White then raced wheel to wheel with Stevens for third on lap 6. After getting by Stevens, White moved along side Kiphen for second on lap 7. Despite having their own personal fight, the Kiphen, White duo reeled in TJ Green on lap 8, while Jason Honey caught Stevens for fourth.

White got inside Kiphen on lap 10 and was looking for the lead in turns 1-2, but Kiphen fought back and retook second in turns 3-4. Kiphen jumped to the high side on was able to get past TJ Green for the lead on lap 12, while White looped it from third and lost several spots. This left Kiphen and TJ green with a big lead over Honey, Stevens and Kevin Green. At the checkers it was Kiphen taking the victory by a few car lengths.

Kirkpatrick KO’s I-Stock field

On the initial start of the IMCA Stock Car feature, polesitter Jess James Cox jr got a good jump, so good in fact, that flagman called off the start. As the field stacked up Jon Neilson and Ray Tinkey got tangled sending Neilson to the pits. The second start saw Cox and Robin Rasmussen stay door to door in turn 1-2, with three wide racing for third. Cox was able to lead lap 1, while Shad Stevens and Jason Bogard ran side by side for second.

Bogard tried to duck inside Cox on lap 2, but fell back moving Stevens to second and Benji Kirkpatrick to third. Kirkpatrick got around Stevens and got beside Cox for the lead. The two scrapped it out side by side for two laps until Kirkpatrick snagged the spot on lap 5. Tinkey brought out the yellow on lap 6 when he spun in turn 3.

On the restart, Kirkpatrick got away clean, while Eric Jones and Jason Batt got by Cox for third and fourth. Jones and Batt then ran door to door for third, with Batt getting the spot. By lap 10 the top two had four-car margins over Batt, Jones and Bogard. Batt, who drove in from Des Moines, Iowa for the weekend, reeled in Stevens in the final laps. At the checkers it was, current points leader, Kirkpatrick in the Wilson Chassis Co., Kinds Automotive, Ronnie Symack Construction, Phils Motorsports, Photos by Debbie, I-Stock taking the win, with Stevens holding off Batt for second.

Wininger wins two in a row

It took three tries, but the Street Stock feature finally got going, with Brian Fuller getting the lead from polesitter, Dean Silva. Albert Wininger jr got by Silva on lap 1 to snag second. On lap 2 Joe Fuller, Tim Fasano and Dennis Simmons were battling it out for fourth and were joined current points leader, Trevor Sparkman and defending class champ, Robert Simmerman on lap 3.

Wininger got by B. Fuller for lead on lap 4 as the top two ran up on heavy traffic. B. Fuller was able to retake the point on lap 5, but after going three wide around a lapped car, Wininger recaptured the point. Simmerman was able to get by Sparkman for fourth while J. Fuller was closing in on brother, B. Fuller for second. The red flag waved at halfway for Ken Plonsky who got sideways in turn 3, dug in and rolled over a couple times, coming to rest on his wheels. Plonsky was able to get out under his own power and walk away from the crash uninjured.

With Wininger holding the lead, the two Fullers scrapped it out door to door for second. Simmerman had an axle break on lap 12 ending his top five run and bringing out the caution. The top three got away clean on green, while Sparkman tried to make his way through traffic a quarter lap behind. The Fuller’s continued their battle for second running side by side and three wide by slower cars. Up front it was Wininger, in the Wininger Racing Chevy Camaro taking the checkers by ten car lengths over the Fullers.

“Nasty” Nate Cullifer got the early lead at the start of the 15 lap Texas Twister feature, with two and three wide in the pack behind him. Last weeks winner, Randy Doyle moved up to take second from Tom Yagalla with Chris Wilkinson on his tail. Doyle assumed the lead on lap 3 when Cullifer had problems and was forced to retire. As Doyle pulled away is was side by side racing for fourth, sixth and eighth. That quickly turned into a three wide fight for third between Larry Tuerck, TJ Yagalla and points leader, Keith Desmarais.

Desmarais moved into third getting by T. Yagalla on lap 9 and took over second on lap 10 when Wilkinson spun after contact with a lapped car. TJ Yagalla got by Desmarais on lap 12 but Doyle had nearly a full straightaway lead. Doyle put it on cruise control the final three laps to take his second win in a row.

The Teen Mini Stock feature started like most, with the three fastest cars of Joseph Charnock, Travis Zwiefelhofer and defending champion, Colton Monroe splitting away from the pack. As the three battled for the lead, Monroe slowed and pulled to the infield. This left Charnock and Zwiefelhofer far out front.

Charnock opened up a good advantage at the mid-way point, but nearly threw away the win after doing a half spin and taking trip through the infield grass. This gave Zwiefelhofer the chance to not only catch back up, but get the nose out front on lap 8. Charnock fought back getting the top spot back as the white flag waved and was able to hold Zwiefelhofer at bay the final lap. The win, coupled with Monroe’s DNF moved Charnock into the Teen Mini Stock points lead.

The night ended with the long anticipated “Gauntlet Race.” A few boats from the past boat race were placed around the track to add to carnage about to occur. Larry Ware, Larry Tuerck, John Luke and JD Hardcastle were the four demo car drivers, with Ware and Tuerck driving ‘dually’ demo cars. The driver of the bus was named as Con Vick, recently bailed out of jail by promoter Pat Wilson.

The green waved with the bus out front and the four demo cars trying to figure what the heck to do with it. Hardcastle and Luke took first cracks at it trying to pinch it between them. That plan ended when Hardcastle was driven into one the boats causing a flat right front. Ware and Tuerck then tried to flatten the bus tires, with the same limited results. Just as looked like the bus would win, Hardcastle in his wounded car, slowed and was caught by the bus on the final lap.

As the bus pushed Hardcastle into turn 1, the three remaining cars ganged up on the bus from both sides, trying to get into the wheel wells. The buses momentum was slowed enough for Ware and Tuerck to get under the bus enough to lift the left rear tire. With Ware and Tuerck wedged under the bus, it was no longer able to continue. The count down was now on. Try as it might the bus was unable to move, taking the ten count, and giving the win to the four demo cars.

As the demo driver pulled into victory lane to collect their spoils, the bus pulled up and driver began launching water balloons, and spraying the drivers with a super soaker. Once the bus doors opened it was finally discovered that the driver was not a recently released convict, but long time Killeen are racer, Gerald Hellmandollar
