ASCS Sooner Region Fires Off with Texas Double

by Lonnie Wheatley

Tulsa, OK (April 9, 2007) - It will be a rendition of the Texas Two Step for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region this weekend, as the series kicks off the 2007 season with a pair of events south of the Red River.

Friday night, the top Sprint Car drivers from Oklahoma and Texas clash at Waco's Heart O' Texas Speedway. Then on Saturday night, the series moves on to Kennedale's Cowtown Speedway, putting an exclamation point on a busy weekend of NASCAR action in the Fort Worth area.

Friday's Heart O' Texas event marks the first stand-alone ASCS Sooner Region event atop the semi-banked, ¼-mile clay oval. Last year, the Sooner Region took on the ASCS Gulf South Region in a challenge event between the two Regions. This year, both Regions have a solo card in Waco (the ASCS Gulf South Region takes on the Heart O' Texas on July 13) before squaring off in another showdown on August 31.

The ASCS Sooner Region has featured a half dozen different winners in eight events contested over the past three years atop the high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway dirt oval, dubbed the "Fastest Lil' Dirt Track in Texas". Forney, TX, hotshoe Travis Rilat, expected for this weekend's action, has topped two of the last four Sooner Region features at Cowtown.

Fort Worth's Kevin Ramey and Collinsville, OK, racer Sean McClelland, both past ASCS Sooner Region champions, will be among the leading combatants for victory honors over the weekend, with other top contenders expected to include Brian McClelland, J.P. Bailey, Dex Eaton, Eric Baldaccini, Johnny Miller, Derek Cottrell, Justin Melton, Sherman Davis, Skip Wilson and George White.

Last year, NASCAR ace Carl Edwards dropped in on the ASCS Sooner Region at Cowtown Speedway. After competing in the Saturday afternoon NASCAR Bush Series event, Edwards made the quick 30-mile journey from Texas Motor Speedway to Cowtown Speedway and drove a Mike Sanders-owned Sprint Car to a tenth-place feature finish after winning the "B" Main.

Fresh off a NASCAR Bush series win this past weekend, the back-flipping Edwards is rumored as a possible ASCS Sooner Region Cowtown Speedway contender on Saturday night.

Friday night's action at Heart O' Texas Speedway goes green at 8:00 p.m., with Saturday's card at Cowtown Speedway firing off at 7:00 p.m.

Heart O' Texas Speedway is located in Waco, TX, off I-35 Exit 343, then 0.6 miles north on east frontage road. For more information, contact the track at 254-829-2294.

Cowtown Speedway is located just east of Fort Worth in Kennedale, TX, off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Highway, then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road. For more information, contact the track at 817-478-9952.

The 2007 schedule for the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region consists of 18 events at eight different tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
