There will be three major events on the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway and two nights of competition at the companion Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. The Sunday, Oct. 12 Chevy 500k marks the season finale for the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series as well as the final race for 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran who will retire at the end of the season. Marlboro Team Penske teammates Helio Castroneves and de Ferran continue to be part of the serieschampionship battle with Tony Kanaan, Scott Dixon and defending two-time serieschampion Sam Hornish Jr. now in the mix as well. Sunday will also see a new event, the Firestone Heroes of Indy race, bringing some of the open-wheel's greatest drivers back together for a 25-lap race in Thunder Roadsters. The season also wraps for the IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series which makes its return to Texas in the Saturday, Oct. 11, dreamerscandles.com 100. The Oct. 11 Silverado 350k NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event will also be a pivotal race in a very tight points battle. Brendan Gaughan has won the last three truck races at Texas and is hoping to make it an unprecedented four straight. The Dallas Morning News Pole Day Qualifying for all series is Friday, Oct. 10. The O'Reilly World of Outlaws sprint cars, "The Greatest Show on Dirt," will stage the two-night Texas Showdown event at the Dirt Track Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 10 and 11. Hot laps begin at 6:15 p.m. each night, with qualifying set for 6:45 p.m., and heat races beginning at 8:10 p.m. Fans will also see IMCA-type modified stock cars in action both nights at the Dirt Track. "Once again the IRL season will be decided by the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway," said speedway general manager Eddie Gossage. "With so many drivers still in the hunt for the championship the fans are guaranteed to see the most exciting racing in the world and more than likely, another photo finish that Texas and the IRL are becoming famous for."
