ASCS Gulf South Double This Weekend!

by Lonnie Wheatley

TULSA, OK (April 3, 2007) - After a soggy Louisiana Saturday, the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region will try once again to fire off its sixth season of racing action with a Southeast Texas double this weekend.

Friday night, the ASCS Gulf South Region will open the season at Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, TX, before moving on to Baytown's Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night. It marks the first of five Beaumont to Baytown ASCS Gulf South weekends for the 2007 season.

Both tracks have proven unpredictable in recent years, with 2005 series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek the only driver to score multiple ASCS Gulf South wins at either track.

Seven different drivers have visited ASCS Gulf South victory lane in eight events at the high-banked, ¼-mile Motorama Speedway gumbo clay oval since 2004. Kulhanek posted back-to-back wins in 2005. Last year, Gary Watson scored his first career ASCS win in June at Motorama, with Jason Johnson and Kevin Ramey also victorious in Beaumont.

Five different drivers have topped ASCS Gulf South action in seven trips to Houston Raceway Park, which will sport a new look this year after being reconfigured to a ¼-mile clay oval for the 2007 season. Kulhanek has raced to victory lane three times at Houston Raceway Park, including twice last year. Other ASCS Gulf South winners at Houston Raceway Park last year included Tulsa's Brad Best and past ASCS National champion Travis Rilat.

A strong field of cars is expected for this weekend's season-opening double for the ASCS Gulf South Region, with Beaumont's Gary Watson kicking off his title defense over the likes of three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat, 2005 champ Kulhanek, Louisiana's Lane Whittington, Chris Sweeney Kent Lewis, Jr., and teen shoe Channin Tankersley among others.

Several top ASCS National Tour contenders could drop in on the action as well.

Friday's action at Motorama Speedway goes green at 8:00 p.m., following an Easter Egg hunt for the kids at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday's card at Houston Raceway Park fires off at 7:00 p.m.

Motorama Speedway is located west of Beaumont, TX, 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.

Houston Raceway Park is located east of Houston in Baytown, TX, off I-10 Exit 798, then three miles south on SR 146, then 0.8 miles southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565. For more information, contact the track at 281-383-7223.

The 2007 slate for the ASCS Gulf South Region consists of 24 events at ten different tracks throughout Louisiana and Texas as well a single event in Mississippi.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With 13 different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
