McClelland Masters Saturday Short Track Nationals Prelim

Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 28, 2006) – Oklahoma's Sean McClelland charged past Dale Blaney for the point midway through Saturday afternoon's 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires 20-lap preliminary feature and led the rest of the way to secure the victory at I-30 Speedway.

With the triumph, the 2005 American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region champion locked himself into Saturday night's $15,000-to-win Short Track Nationals championship finale along with runner-up Blaney and third-place finisher Darren Stewart.

"Bring 'em on, I'm ready for it," McClelland exclaimed in victory lane. "We're gonna get the pole position and we're gonna win this thing."

McClelland gridded Saturday's preliminary feature outside the front row, but it was polesitter Blaney gunning into the lead after a pair of attempted starts were waved off for turn one tangles.

After another stoppage with one lap in the books for Ryan Anderson and Brian McClelland, who got together exiting turn four, the balance of the race ran off in non-stop fashion.

Blaney paced the early rounds with McClelland and Stewart. But as Blaney approached lapped traffic midway through the race, McClelland quickly closed the gap and charged by exiting turn four on the tenth round to take the lead for keeps.

Heavy lapped traffic in the final rounds allowed Blaney to close the gap, but McClelland took the checkered flag with a three car-length advantage aboard Wade and Alisha Wisely's Oil Capital Transportation/Rush Truck Center No. 1 Maxim.

Blaney settled for second in Ron Hammons' No. 6b machine, commenting that, "The car started going bad about five laps into the race and kept getting worse and worse the longer we went, we were just hanging on at the end.

Charging from the eighth position, Jesse Hockett was reeling in Stewart to challenge for the third position when his right rear tire finally exploded as the white flag flew. Stewart held the show position, explaining that, "This means a lot, I think my car owner Bobby Sparks has made this show about every year since it's started, maybe I can get him a third win tonight."

California's Brad Sweet snared fourth, with Lubbock's Preston Peebles II rounding out the top five. Cody Branchcomb raced from 19th to finish sixth, with 18th-starter Scott Winters, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Brian Bell and Travis Rilat, who flipped in the final corner while dicing for position with Stenhouse, completing the top ten.

Bell, Blaney, Marshall Skinner, Tim Crawley, Jason Meyers, Rilat, Winters, Bryce Vowan and Sweet topped heat race action for Saturday afternoon's 87-car field. Claud Estes, Brian Brown, Jon Corbin and Jeff Mitrisin won last chance races, with Brian McClelland, Steven Tiner, Chris Morgan and Peebles topping the qualifying races.

A total of 99 drivers competed in the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires preliminary events. Six drivers (Tim Kaeding, Sean McClelland, Jason Johnson, Dale Blaney, Dale Howard and Darren Stewart) are locked into Saturday night's $15,000-to-win, $1,900-to-start STN finale. The balance of the field will battle for the remaining starting positions through a full slate of heat races, last chance races and qualifying races, with action going green at approximately 7:30 p.m.
