rebelracewriter
Kaeding Scores Friday Short Track Nationals Preliminary Win Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 27, 2006) – Tim Kaeding had never turned a lap atop I-30 Speedway's high-banked, ¼-mile clay oval prior to Friday night, but that didn't prevent the California racer from storming to victory lane over a field of 98 competitors in the opening 25-lap preliminary feature for the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires. Kaeding battled past Jason Johnson to take command midway through the feature event then led the rest of the way aboard Donnie Cooper's Wesmar-powered Carry All Services No. 01 Maxim, positioning the Missouri car owner for a possible third STN crown after enjoying previous wins with Paul McMahan in 2002 and Tim Montgomery in 2005. "I've gotta thank Donnie (Cooper) for giving me a chance to be here, he called a couple of weeks ago and we were able to put this together. "The best thing about this win is that now we can relax tomorrow afternoon. There's a lot of good cars here, so winning tomorrow night is going to be tough. I finished second to Jason Johnson in a Knoxville Nationals preliminary earlier this year, so maybe we can get a little payback tomorrow." While Kaeding captured his 16th overall feature win of the 2006 season, Johnson and Dale Howard finished second and third, respectively, to lock themselves into Saturday night's $15,000-to-win STN finale as well. After starting sixth, Howard charged past Johnson for second on the 17th circuit, only to have Johnson reclaim the position a handful of laps later. Johnson crossed the stripe second in Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Diesel Service No. 41 Eagle, with Howard taking the show position in the TCI Tire Centers No. 47 Maxim. Kaeding was stellar all night, racing from eighth to nip Scott Winters at the line in a rousing finish to win the evening's ninth of ten heat races. The top point earner through heat race action, Kaeding then climbed from tenth to finish fourth in his qualifying race to earn the pole position for the feature. But it was outside front row feature starter Johnson, after posting a blistering half-lap heat race victory then racing from tenth to second in his qualifier, gunning into the lead at the drop of the green flag in the feature. While Johnson led Kaeding, Robbie Standridge, Jesse Hockett and Howard the first time around, the first caution quickly appeared after a front stretch scramble left debris on the track. Defending STN king Tim Montgomery retired to the pit area with nose wing damage, while four-time STN winner Gary Wright went pitside as well after starting in the tenth and final row. Following Jon Corbin's easy turn two tumble, Johnson set the pace with Kaeding in his wake. But as Johnson approached lapped traffic on the tenth round, Kaeding closed the gap and put on the pressure. Kaeding took advantage to race into the lead on the 12th circuit and weathered a pair of cautions over the final half of the race, including the race's final interruption when fifth-running Darren Stewart looped his machine in turn four with just seven laps to go. Kaeding went on to race underneath the checkered flag just three car-lengths ahead of Johnson, with Howard a close third. Jan Howard, Dale's younger brother, turned in the race's top passing performance by charging from 14th to fourth aboard Frank Lofton's No. 4x, with Standridge rounding out the top five. Hockett crossed the stripe sixth, with Terry Gray, Scott Winters, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., and Clint Garner completing the top ten. Fifteen-year-old Channin Tankersley advanced to the main event by way of last chance race competition and climbed to eleventh at the stripe. Heat races were won by Tim Crawley, Brad Best, Dusty Wasmund, Johnson, Hockett, Steven Tiner, Gray, Zack Pringle, Kaeding and Dale Howard. Ernie Ainsworth, Tankersley, Sean McClelland and Scottie McDonald advanced to qualifying race action with Last Chance race victories, with Raymond Stull, Stenhouse, Travis Whitney and Standridge victorious in the 12-lap qualifying races. Two different drivers appeared to be on the way to the "A" Main with solid leads in the qualifying races, only to crash while out front. Eric Sandage held the lead in the first qualifier when he hit the infield tires entering turn one after something broke on his mount. Then, in the fourth qualifier, Brian Brown had the race well in hand when a broken front-end just two laps from the checkered flag derailed his run. Jack Dover, Forrest Sutherland, Wayne Johnson and Eric Baldaccini each flipped during heat race action, with Steve Short taking a wild turn three ride in the third last chance race. Jeff Mitrisin and Ryan Marsch both got upside down when a front row starter looped his mount in front of the field at the start of the night's tenth heat race. While outside front row starter Ernie Ainsworth escaped Rodney Droud's spinning machine, the balance of the eight-car field was collected in the melee. There were no injuries. Three more drivers will be locked into Saturday night's $15,000-to-win, $1,900-to-start STN finale in Saturday afternoon's preliminary event (a makeup of Thursday's rainout), which gets under way at 12:00 noon. After reworking the track following the afternoon show, the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires championship finale fires off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. 19th Annual Short Track Nationals Friday Night Results: Heat Races – Top 40 in Finishing/Passing Points to Four Qualifying Races; Balance of Field to Four Last Chance Races.
