O'Reilly ASCoT Headlines 33rd Annual Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (October 9, 2006) The O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour will put the wraps on the 2006 season with this weekend's 33rd Annual Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX. And if Gary Wright can follow past Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals form, he can put away his third consecutive ASCS National Tour championship.

The two-night affair will feature two full nights of racing for the ASCS National Tour, with the top four finishers from Friday night's preliminary feature locked into Saturday night's season finale.

With a 58-point advantage over "The Ragin' Cajun", Jason Johnson, entering the weekend, Wright can secure the series title by just finishing 14th or better on both Friday and Saturday night.

With 106 career ASCS National Tour victories to his credit, including a pair this year, Wright has topped the ASCS October finale at Devil's Bowl six times in the seven years since 1999. It was only in 2004, when Shane Stewart broke into Winter Nationals victory lane, that the Hooks, TX, ace was denied victory honors.

Wright will try to keep the championship out of Jason Johnson's hands. Johnson, from Eunice, LA, has posted a series' best eight National Tour wins this year and 16 overall, including eight Regional triumphs. Johnson scored an ASCS National Tour win at Devil's Bowl Speedway in 2002.

Just another 21 points behind Johnson in third is Rookie of the Year contender Jesse Hockett of Warsaw, MO. Hockett, an early season ASCoT winner at Baton Rouge and the Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless champion in August, retains a slight chance at the championship as well entering the weekend.

Hockett is just 40 points ahead of fellow Rookie of the Year contender Nick Smith entering the weekend. Smith, with a pair of National Tour wins this season, tuned up for this weekend's action with a $3,000 win in this past weekend's ASCS Sooner Region Nationals at Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, OK.

Former ASCS National champion Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, enters the weekend ranked fifth, with the balance of the current top ten including Houston Raceway Park ASCoT winner and Rookie contender Sean McClelland (Collinsville, OK), current ASCS Mid-South Region point leader Darren Stewart (Bixby, OK), 14-year-old Rookie shoe Trey Robb (Newcastle, OK), newly-crowned ASCS Sooner Region champion Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Sunnyvale, TX) and 2005 series Rookie of the Year Tony Bruce, Jr. (Liberal, KS).

Racing action is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night.

Devil's Bowl Speedway is located six miles east of Dallas' I-635 on US 80, then three miles south on Lawson Road. For more information, contact the track at 972-222-2421.

The 2006 O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour features a record $150,000 point fund, with $50,000 earmarked for the champion. The series will contest approximately 30 events throughout Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Virginia, Michigan and Iowa.

In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
