Bullock becomes youngest IMCA rookie of the year

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 6) – Mark Bullock Jr. has written his name in the record book, as the youngest driver to be named a national IMCA rookie of the year.

Bullock, from Sunnyvale, Texas, celebrated his 14th birthday less than four weeks after the 2006 points season began. He won six of 48 starts enroute to top rookie honors in the Hobby Stock division.

Four drivers had won national rookie titles at the age of 16; this was the first season Hobby Stock drivers as young as 14 could compete at sanctioned events, at tracks 3/8 a mile and shorter.

Joining Bullock in earning national IMCA laurels were Jason Schoenberger of Gorham, Kan., Modifieds; Robert J. See of Altoona, Iowa, Late Models; Jesse Lee Cripe of Rice, Minn., KSE Racing Products Sprint Cars; Jacob Murray of Hartford, Iowa, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods; and Kirk Kinsley of Wapello, Iowa, Stock Cars.

Schoenberger scored three feature wins in 59 starts, collecting track titles at Elmwood Park Speedway and Wakeeney Speedway, along with the Thunder Series crown. See made one trip to victory lane in 28 showings and Cripe counted five top eight finishes in 22 outings against typically veteran laden fields.

Murray garnered 19 wins, including the Harris Clash special at Knoxville Raceway, in 51 starts. He was track champion at Stuart Speedway and the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines.

Kinsley counted six wins in 33 sanctioned races.

Schoenberger also ruled the rookie ranks in the SuperFlow Central Region.

Other Modified regional ROYs are Ryan Roath of Surprise, Ariz., Western; Josh Foster of Montrose, Iowa, North Central; Andew Simmerman of Evant, Texas, South Central; and Milt Montgomery Jr. of Alma, Mich., Eastern.

Roath won once in 37 starts. Foster took 13 checkers in 36 starts and was track champion at Lee County Speedway.

Montgomery totaled three wins in 42 weekly shows. Simmerman came on strong toward the end of the season, ending with 15 top five finishes in 37 starts.

Tommy Honey, Waco, Texas, paced first year competitors in the Destroyer Chassis Southern Stock Car Region, posting a trio of top five runs in 32 starts.
