ASCS Gulf South Set for Weekend Double

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 15, 2006) The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region is set to provide an exciting weekend of racing actions for fans in the Houston area with events at Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, TX, on Friday night and Baytown's Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night.

Closing in on a first series championship, Texas City, TX, veteran Greg Rilat enters the weekend with a 40-point advantage over Beaumont shoe Gary Watson. While Rilat has amassed a series-best seven top-five feature finishes, Watson scored his first career ASCS Gulf South Region feature win at Motorama in the series most recent stop atop the high-banked, ¼-mile gumbo clay oval on June 23.

The lead pair is chased by defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Conroe, TX, who scored his first win of the year on June 24 at Houston Raceway Park. Last Tuesday, Kulhanek shed his wings and made the cut for the O'Reilly Sprint Bandit Tour 'N Topless $30,000-to-win Ultimate Challenge "A' Feature event at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa against a stellar field of 410-ci wingless aces.

Lane Whittington of Denham Springs, LA, enters the weekend ranked fourth with one 2006 series win to his credit, with Larry Hartwell of Pasadena, TX, rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the current top ten includes Richard Holt (McLeod, TX), Chris Sweeney (Channelview, TX), Kent Lewis, Jr. (Willis, TX), Jason Johnson (Eunice, LA) and 15-year-old Channin Tankersley (Highlands, TX).

Friday's card at Motorama Speedway fires off at 8:00 p.m., with Saturday's action slated to go green at 7:30 p.m.
